I've been Cubing for about 6 months now and have just reached a sub-20 PB with 3x3. I would really like to try competing because I have read that competitions inspire you and are fun! However, I hesitate to try it because I feel I'm not fast enough yet. Let me know if this is just in my head and if I should try it or if I should wait until I reach sub-15.

Welcome to the forums! You should definitely start competing if you want! You are faster now than most people probably are at their first competition. Besides, it doesn't matter about your times, just go and have fun. I guaruntee that 90% of people on here will tell you same thing. Just go!

Start as soon as possible. There's no speed you have to be faster than to compete. You should go to comps, and I would say that even if you averaged 2 minutes.

FYI, Lucas Garron, who is in charge of the WCA and is in charge of competitive speedcubing as we know it, averaged 1:29 at his first competition.

Well I'm one of the 10%. He's too slow and will hold up the competition. He should definitely wait until he's sub10.

He what? And what? No wonder my times keep going into the database 5 seconds faster than what I actually get. That corrupt Garron kid is up to no good!

Thanks for the support and for the help.... I'll try to enter in a competition as soon as possible.

Compete when there is a competition near you.
Forget how fast you are, just go to it.
You never know, it could be the last competition near you for a year.

6 months and you are already sub 20 is really good, i think you should definitely go, i would love to be sub 20 and i have been cubing for 2 years, and i would still go when one comes up

I'm new to cubing to and I was wondering the same thing. After reading your post and the comments I decided to participate to competitions as soon as theyre near me.
But I have few questions that bothers me:

1) How to know when and where competitions will be hosted?
2) How do I actually do go in competitions( like I just go there?, I have to be in an eligibale group first? etc..)
3) If the competitions is in an other country will I pay the airplane myself? And can I bring other members of my family?
4) I know the time doesn't really bother but what time would you recommend like sub 1min?
5) What are the rewards?(like 1st,2nd,3rd etc..)
6) How does it actually work( I just get 5 solves and thats it?)

I hope I guess some answers back and preferably from someone who went to an actual competitions. SOrry for my bad english I mainly speak french. Thank in advance for your answers :)

1. WCA website, just search in google, it will be there
2. Sign up on wca site and register at comp then go
3. You pay, unless you are beast enough to get sponsored
4. Definitely sub 10s. Jk lol sub 10mins. Thats the cutoff. Any lower than 10 minutes a solve and you will have fun.
5. Depends on the competition. You can get puzzles for 1/2/3 ranks, and sometimes cash prizes.
6. You wait for your name to be called in your heat, you give your cube, they scramble, you solve, repeat times 5, then you do it again if you made it to the second round. Usually, there are 3 3x3 rounds, so 15 solves if you are fast enough, but 5 guaranteed.
Youre english is great btw. I find it amazing how people have the confidence to type and talk to people in their non dominant language. Good for you! I havent been to a competition, because there are only a few a year in my area. However, i think my info is pretty good. Now imma try french:
6. Too lazy...
Hope my french is bearable. Ur english is alot better than my french...
