[Unofficial] 4.21 3x3 single (Feliks Zemdegs)

In disputed situations regulations has slight meaning. WCA board restored WR to Kabyanil Talukdar because they felt that it is right thing to do. Do you guys really think that they would agree to approve ~40 results around 1s in 3x3 that would destroy entire ranking and make 3x3 single meaningless?

2x2, pyraminx and skewb single are already meaningless, clock is pretty much meaningless too, the difference it would make would be minimal

E: Also, maybe some other comp somewhere else has a similar scramble and the delegate decides to not remove it. How would you sort this out?

I disagree with bolded. Pyraminx, clock and skewb WR single were all obtained whilst the current holder also had the average world record, indicating a very high correlation between the WR single holder and the best solver in the event.

As to your edit, I am sure such solves would be retroactively DNF'd

And thus destroy the average of someone who could not affect the situation? That would be pretty unfair if you ask me.

Also another thing: The Pyraminx WR single was 6 moves, but according to current WCA regs the scrambles for pyra must be atleast 7 moves from solved, Should the current pyraWRsingle be DNF'ed?

On what grounds can/should delegates discard/filter scrambles then? Should F2L-skip be discarded? What about xxx(or xx or x)-cross skip be discarded? What about 1-2 moves away from any of the before mentioned cases?

Also it is good to remember that 2x2 single WR is done with a 4 move scramble. That wasn't discarded either and all the records made with that scramble still stand official...
So to answer your question: Yes I really think records from such scramble would(or at least should) be allowed to stand because all results from a 4-move 2x2 scramble are already official and that's also ridiculous.

At present there are no grounds, because basically it's easier to cross our fingers and hope it doesn't happen than to actually make a decision about it.

I realise 2x2 single is retarded. I have argued on many occasions to remove the acknowledgement of 2x2 single WR (and 2x2 in general). Anyway, a 4 move scramble on a 2x2 isn't that unlikely (think: we have on average about 10 competitions around the world in a week. Let's guess on average 2 rounds of 2x2 per comp, with 2 groups in first round. So 3 lots of scrambles, with 7 scrambles per sheet, so 21 per comp, 210 per weekend, more than 10000 per year). On the other hand, a T-perm on a 3x3 has a one in 43 quintillion chance of showing up.

Interestingly, I know Tyson Mao isn't a fan of 3x3 single. Personally I still think the record has some worth, as long as we don't let it get to a point where it is something retarded like a T-perm.

Bear something in mind: we delegates don't work in total isolation. We regularly communicate via a google group, which also includes the regulations committee and the Board. If something like a crazy easy scramble showed up, we could just send everyone an e-mail and figure out what to do in real time (this is something that already happens with unusual situations that show up in comps).

Another thing to bear in mind: The regulations aren't like The Bible, written by the guided hand of the Holy God. We, as a community, work together to create the regulations. We can make them as we please, and change them at a whim. So ask yourself: if some retarded scramble showed up in some random competition somewhere and people were getting sub1 solves on 3x3, do you think we should just accept it and leave it like that forever, or do you think we would agree as a community that it's an anomaly that should be fixed so it doesn't ruin everything? I mean, we could always set those records aside (rather than DNFing them) and have a separate category (kind of like wind assisted sprints).

no.

Imo the regulations should be changed to filter <6 moves, which would make sense given that the current WR is 6 moves...

Yeah because T-perm is totally the only possible lol-scramble on 3x3 /sarcasm
All 3x3 scrambles with f2l skip xxx cross skip xx cross skip and much more are included here obviously for "retarded" 3x3 scrambles as you call them. And as you said we have more than 10000 official 3x3 scrambles every year so at some point we will get one of these and we have to deal with it. But the problem here is where to draw the line? Do you think for example that xcross skip is too "retarded"?

I was trying to resist posting on this but I'll state my thoughts anyway.

I think that a scenario such as the one being described is not one that the regulations take into account. In such a case, I wouldn't see it adequately fit to just eliminate the scramble in the spot. That simply shows blatant disregard to the regulations. However, that doesn't mean I think it should be counted. Because such a case is so rare, I think it would be best to give each competitor a 6th solve using E1, and allow the matter to be decided later.

This is currently what happens when misscrambles are given. Nothing the competitor is doing wrong yet their averages are often slowed as a result.

As for Pyraminx I was wanting the move filter to be 6 last year when they added it, so I agree with you that it currently isn't fair

Yes this happens and it's one of the things I most fear when competing in bld and setting new nrs (hasn't happened to me luckily :) ) because there is nothing I can do to prevent that. I find it REALLY unfair to the competitor, but the problem is I don't have a good solution to this problem. Obviously just accepting all the misscrambles would not be good, but neither is punishing competitor for something he/she cannot prevent in any way... Giving everyone that 6th extra solve just in case something like this could happen would work but it would also slow down competitions and 99.9% of the time it is not necessary...

Anyone got any good suggestions on this?
