Claim to Fame: website, puzzle collection, puzzle theory

Jaap Scherphuis is a Dutch cuber from Delft, Netherlands. He is one of the biggest puzzle collectors in the world and a prominent puzzle theorist. His website, Jaap's Puzzle Page, is one of the most comprehensive guides to many puzzles.

He got his first Rubik's Cube when he was about 8 or 9, and solved it with the aid of a solution booklet. From then on he tried to solve puzzles himself, solving Pyraminx, Orbit, Alexander's Star, and Rubik's Revenge in quick succession (although edge parity stumped him). Over the years he learned a lot of puzzle theory, and has also written computer programs for solving puzzles. He attended World Championship 2003 in Toronto and still finds it "hilarious that I won the Rubik's Clock event there."
