Using sand to loosen a store bought cube?

Many of you guys should know this very popular cuber on youtube. That's right, it's Thrawst.
In his lubing tutorial, he said that he used sand in two of his store bought cubes to help break it in and make it loose. I tried it to my cube, and it was worse. The pieces were rougher than before and it makes a scratchy sound whenever I turn it. It did not make the cube loose at all.:confused:

I think you're supposed to wash it after a while
