Straughan Recognition

I recently discovered a new recognition system for CLL that uses just four stickers total. In this system, just the locations of the two F and two R stickers are checked. The location of these four stickers is enough to determine a case. I have applied this system to CLL, EG, ZBLL, CMLL, and a new way of determining corner permutation in methods such as CEOR. ZBLL requires just six stickers for case recognition when two edges are included with the corner case. There is even more development planned for additional steps and puzzles. Click the link at the top of this post to see how recognition works for each step.

The major advantage of this system is that it has applications for tracking and prediction. For example, this small number of stickers may allow for tracking and predicting all or most of CMLL or ZBLL during the last slot. For 2x2, it may mean a bit less thought required during inspection. Or, as suggested by Liam Highducheck, people are seeing further ahead every day during 3x3 inspection. Having just six stickers to track will make it easier to know the ZBLL case if people ever get to the point of inspecting up to ZBLL. In the case of inspection, only one sticker of the corner with two stickers needs to be tracked. This means that tracking requires just three stickers for CLL and five for ZBLL.

I have documented ZBLL recognition that uses only the visible stickers within the UF and UR bars. So the UBL corner, UB and UL edges, and the LUF and BRU stickers are never involved. Some benefits:
  • Less sticker scanning than other recognition systems.
  • Fewer stickers on average involved in the overall recognition.
  • Systems can be used during LS to track pieces going to any two adjacent 1x1x3 bar locations to aid in prediction.
  • AUFs are associated with patterns. It's unnecessary to check and hold a mental image of an overall U sticker orientation, such as Sune or T, and mentally process an AUF around that orientation.
  • Designed completely around multi-angle recognition.
  • A great transition from BH and maybe some other recognition systems once a solver is ready to learn multi-angle.
The negative is that multi-angle recognition is required since this is what the recognition was designed for.

This new recognition follows the six sticker ZBLL recognition system that is intended for tracking or one-looking solves. People often asked me if it could be used for impromptu recognition in a normal solve and if there was a way to make it work for multi-angle. This new recognition is the response to that and maintains a lot of the same minimum sticker traits.
