Decided to start learning OH today, so I got my spare cube out and loosened as much as possible, read a bit on Lofty's page, and began!

First thing I noticed was, I find it really difficult to perform R'. I've tried both pinky pressing on FDR and Pinky/Rink pressing on DBR and find them both hard, so I've been using index on BUR. I was wondering is this a bad habit to get into? Should I get into practice of using pinky/ring for all R turns?

Secondly, I find it very difficult to perform PLLs. I get half way through the algorithm and realise I can't do it, and the only way I can finish them is to imagine doing them 2 handed. I guess it's because all my algorithms are in muscle memory so doing them one handed makes it much harder. Any solutions to this problem?

Lastly, just wondered what a good beginning OH time to aim for is, bearing in mind I average 25-30 seconds 2 handed. PB so far was my 4th ever solve, which I got 1.13.89 on.

The answer to most all your questions is practice.
For R' it is possible to get fast using your index finger but I think most people are switching over to using their pinky/ring finger for this. It may be awkward at first but with practice you will get better at it.
For PLL's practice. Eventually they will be in OH muscle memory as well as 2H. Practice doing just the PLL's a few times each.
I would say 1:13.89 is a very good starting place but I don't know as I started OH when I was much much slower than you.

You can't go wrong with practice unless you get an injury. R' was extremely difficult for me at first too but now its second nature. I sometimes accidentally do R2 as R'2 xD. With practice, PLLs will become second nature too. As for your starting time, you're in good shape. I was at about 2 mins when I started. Keep up the good work!

for R' just practice with your pinky/ Ring finger and I have a thread I recently posted becuase there are easier algorithms for OH than using 2H

Ok I've started solving with pinky instead of index finger for R', and although it's pushed my time back by a good 40 seconds (from a minute to about 1.40) I reckon it's something I can get used to. Thanks for the replies everyone.
