Square 1 is epically hard in my opinion. I don't have a clue how to solve it, I've almost done it one, the 16minute record I have is to get it into a square (Not correctly permuted square though :( )

Anyone know how to solve it? The tutorials I've found are quite hard to follow. Any help?

I've got a cube (I can do that pretty easy now) but on tutorials it gives notation like (3,4)

3 means 3x30degrees so that's 90, but if i turn 90 the equator line doesn't line up and I can't twist it, so I mean, huh. I think it's the notation I don't get, on the sites I used it's not the best explaination.

I'm pretty sure it should always line up - if you can't line it up it means you're not in the same beginning state as the site is indicating.

I'm attempting to solve the first scramble from this week's competition - the first thing I did when I got my square 1 was apply the competition scramble. I figured that way I'd get an outlandishly slow time. But at this rate, I may not get to submit it before the competition is over.

Anyway, when I applied the scramble, I never had any problems - it always lined up - so I think you've got the right idea. It must just be the execution that's off somehow. Are you always turning clockwise (as you look at the faces) on both top and bottom for positive numbers, counterclockwise for negative numbers? So for (3,4), you'd turn the top 90 degrees clockwise, and the bottom 120 degrees clockwise? That's what I was doing when I applied the scramble.

This really is the blind leading the blind, though, since I have no clue how to solve it yet - and it should probably be in Beginners Central instead. :)

Probably should have gone there yes, sorry about that.

I can follow most of the notation to get to a cube but not to like, orient and permute the pieces. I'll have another go, thanks for the help so far :)

Maybe I'm holding it wrong, it was a DIY square 1 from Cube4You. Do I hold it so that the equator line goes from front right to back left, or front left to back right? :o

Or does that depend on tutorial?

Damn, still doesn't work for me, sometimes it says turn 3 when I'm on the left side of an edge is aligned (So it's like, halfway through a corner)

Other times it lines up, but when I twist it changes from a square (The method I use keeps a square throughout the solve after you get the square at the start)

Oh ok now I get it, I thought (3) was 60 degrees instead of 90 degrees (I thought 3 was a to turn as much as a corner, but a corner is only 60 degrees not 90)

I've got it now, all the algorithms work when I try them :)
