I’m going to do a Scientific study to see how well different kinds of music will affect solve times

How will I do this? A lot of solves. 10,000 to be precise.

How will this experiment be conducted?
10 groups of solves, each being 1,000 solves long. 9 with music, 1, as a control, without. With the 9 with music, each group will have a different genre of music

What Genres specifically?
1. The Beatles (I know not a genre, but it’s my favorite band and I make the rules so cry about it)
2. Modern Hip Hop
3. 90’s hip hop (I think they have a distinct enough style to warrant 2 different categories)
4. Classical
5. Gregorian Chant (I’m catholic, and I want to see if what it’ll do)
6. Lofi beats
7. Video Game OSTs
8. Experimental/more artsy type music (think velvet underground or on the Aeroplane over the sea by neutral Milk hotel)
9. A mix of all above (kind of like a second control group)

I’m not going to start this right away because I want to see other’s opinions on this idea, and see if there’s any issues that I haven’t seen that could possibly be fixed before I make a big mistake in my research.

I was listening to a cubing podcast the other day. Two NR-level solvers did an ao100 for each music type. They found that “music labelled as ‘calming’ [sic] can improve your solves by .2 compared to ‘silence’”

I think an ao100 is too small of a sample size to really determine anything. Like I’ve done 300 solves in the past few hours listening to the same album on repeat (On the Aeroplane Over the Sea, really good album, go listen to it.) and I don’t think that’s enough to pull any meaningful data from. Also, I think 0.2s, even over an ao1000 is too small to really make any sort of conclusion that it makes you faster.

ALSO, I’d like to say that this experiment is heavily biased towards me, if anyone is else wants to do the same thing, I’ll maybe try to make playlists off all 9 categories and try to see if there’s a correlation. If you want to try this experiment with me, say you want to, and I’ll update you when to start (I want this to be somewhat uniform)

I listen to lofi, and Zelda/SMO/galaxy OST's

How will you account for mid-experiment personal improvement?
I don’t think I’ll improve too much, so if I get progressively lower times, my conclusion will be that music doesn’t matter. (Like if each average gets faster by about 0.1 or something on average, consistently, but if one category is faster or slower by like a second, then that’s a statistical outlier and probably has something deeper going on.)
