hello sir/mam,

first i google and search this forum but produce negative result on what i'm looking for. so i tried a new thread asking this question.

first. i know i read a lot of info from thomas breaking the 3x3 WR average. they mention a lot about the timer malfunction. we also read the WCA regulation but no definite answer from our question. so here it is. what is the margin of timer malfunction? cuz we get alot of error recently in a competition. what we did is this, 0.02 or 0.03 is a timer error so awarded a solve. but higher than that is a DNF. is this OKAY?

second. about the video. we had at least three of accident that the timer and display goes blank after the competitors stop the timer. as when the competitor stop the timer and upon he let go of his hand the timer and display shutdown. we know it is the timer malfuntion. but we would like to know is this, the two occurence happened to be recorded on video. so we watch the video and get time on the video. but unfortunately one competitor don't have a video so we awarded him a DNF. we know it is unfair. but we would like to clarify it by asking from here. can we really rely on a video for the solve IF it was recorded on video? and if it is NOT, it is a DNF? in case the timer and display goes out again.

thanks a lot...

First question: the rule of thumb we use is that anything below 0.10 seconds is ruled as a timer malfunction and competitor is awarded an extra solve. Anything above that is usually the competitor's fault. It's not a hard and fast rule, but it seems to work most of the time.

Second question: This is why the regulations don't allow video evidence to be used in rulings. In the case of timer malfunctions, we don't give results based on a video. Otherwise, as in the situation you describe, people will be unfairly punished for not having their solve on film.

As for the timer turning off after the solve is stopped, was this a recurring problem with a particular timer? Or was it just a case where the competitor accidentally hit the power button when he stopped the timer? That would be ruled a DNF; it is the competitor's responsibility to stop the timer properly.

@david... nope the timer has a good battery. and we always checked the timer before the competition. but maybe there is one malfunctioning. all the three accident happened from one timer only. so we make check for that timer in the near future. thanks for the reply...

@shelly... mam, thanks for my first question answer. we will enforce that. 0.10 or below is a timer malfunction and the competitor is awarded an extra solve and above that is a competitors fault and it is a DNF... thanks...

and the seconds question about video. we know it is not fair. so the rules will stand with this???

11f) The main judge and WCA delegate must not support their decisions with video or photograph analysis.

then it is okay... thanks alot... it helps... really...
