I wish to discuss the feasibility of a format with bo1 and multiple rounds,
rather than having one, two or three attempts kept and considered as a same round.

Pros:
  • Makes MBLD more competitive with scope of changes in ranking in the same competition
  • Organizing is easier as lesser people do their attempts in subsequent rounds
  • No need of cutoff (bad idea as we saw in WC2023), as people get selected for next rounds by their score

Cons:
  • Lesser people qualify to the next round
  • mo3 MBLD score being unofficially or "officially" calculated is out of the picture
  • More pressure to get a non-DNF result in every attempt

Please keep the discussion formal here. Make your point in a coherent manner before posting. You can also list pros and cons rather than picking a side of this proposal.

This discussion is also started on the WCA forum, you can voice your point there as well https://forum.worldcubeassociation.org/t/mbld-bo1-multiple-rounds-competition-format/54189

This was effectively done at world championships in Korea (one round, but cutoffs applied as you suggest after one solve), and I think many people were unhappy with the result, especially because Graham DNFed. (Timo, who is sometimes on here, was probably also pretty unhappy.)

I think it is worth the effort to allow the extra chance to those who have a bad attempt. The scoring system is already harsh enough on overestimating one's ability.

I understand,

How about we do not have a cutoff at all?
And propose bo1 multiple rounds

Revisiting this topic with more thought: I have a modified proposal which I want to discuss before organizing a competition with this format.

What if we have bo3 in the first round of MBLD and bo1 in the second round (finals)?

Is the inconsistency allowed, where a competitor is judged by bo3 in one round and bo1 in the final round? A bo3 first round enables more risky attempts and chances for competitors to get a good score for qualifying into the next round of MBLD.

I am not seeing anything in the regulations or guidelines which prevent this. Are there any regulations pertaining to this that I am missing?

bo3 followed by bo1 might be considered too much, but perhaps alternatively bo2 followed by bo1 would be less taxing on organizers?

It's a scary format, though. Certainly a bo3 will be more likely to give a properly representative podium based on actual skill.

Yes it's a scary format as it has not been tried out until now.

There is no regulation stopping bo3 followed by bo1 MBLD rounds, but I wanted to be sure it is the right thing before contacting a delegate and getting the comp approved from WCAT.
