Hi Everyone,

Last weekend I tried a new feature in order to make competition videos look more dynamic, and it's calculation of avg after every attempt with ranking after every solve.
Similarly to a Qualification Round in Formula 1 Grand Prix.

Here is how it looks like:

The avg of first 3 attempts were calculated as "mean of 3", after 4th attempt the "best" (in blue) was eliminated, after 5th attempt elimination of "best and worst" (blue and red) is a regular process.

I'm not sure whether it's something new and extraordinary, but it's what I can share with you today.

I hope somebody will enjoy watching.

Thanks!

I really like the idea, but:

1) It's way too small. If this takes off, people will be watching this on 2k displays, on projectors, and as 480p streams on smartphones. Can you:

  • Reformat it to take a smaller section of the screen?
  • Make it translucent?
  • Split it into sections that can be shown in different regions, so that it's easier to keep the solve visible?
  • Hide/show or slide it in and out?
  • Hide and show some parts throughout the round?
  • Provide a live timer on the screen in the same place for every solve, so that you don't have to worry about keeping the Stackmat display in the frame?

Here's my suggestion:

Only show the following columns the entire time: name, and average. Either add an indicator for the number of solves they've finished, or mark the average column as incomplete. If you really want countries, add a column with flag icons.

During the solve, only display one additional column: the column with competitor times for the current attempt being shown (so we can tell how everyone else did on the scramble).
Also add a row with all of the current competitor's results.

Between times, show a full version (screen-centered overlay?) of everyone's times and averages.

2) Make it as simple as possible, including the visual style. The current version is so busy that it is a bit hard to read. At the very least, I would remove the gradient in each row. What about starting from the colors used on the WCA results, and changing the some backgrounds to pastel colors? (e.g. green for the best time, red for the worst)

Thanks for making this, I think it is great!

Something I think would be good is filming over the shoulder of competitors, that way other spectators won't be blocking the solves. Then using Lucas Garron's idea and adding a live timer on the screen.
