How does fierce competition affect motivation?

How do you think other cubers speed affect motivation. For example how does it feel for a competitive cuber who lives in Australia always loosing too Feliks or Jayden, will it push you harder or does it just feel hopeless?

It's best when it's a good balance. At my latest comp I didn't do too well because I was too focused on podiuming. (I got 2nd anyway though :)) At comps like Nationals last year I didn't do too well because I knew I wasn't realistically going to make the semifinals so I didn't have motivation.

For me it boosts motivation, I'm almost sub 15 and seeing people sub 7 makes me want to beat them
I was thinking about a more local perspective. I for example know I wont win any comps for quite a while since I would have to beat Odder and Westlund, how fast Yu da Hyun and Pablo is doesn't really affect me.

I do the same thing that I do when I swim, do my best and if I win then that's just a bonus

To try to win that event would be hopeless, but my goal, or probably most others' goal is to get on that podium. Also, the idea of specialising in an event and catching up to Jay motives you quite well.
