How does a void cube work (also are there any paper void cubes that people have made)?

I was thinking of trying to make a Rubik's Cube Halloween costume using a large void cube. The problem is, I can't find any resources on how it works. A paper version would also be helpful, as I could then make that bigger but use cardboard instead. Does anyone have any resources for this?

Am skeptical about this…paper has a ton of friction. Have you thought about only having some of the layers move?
