Hi guys!

I'm a 45 year old guy from Alaska. Been cubing since elementary school, where I figured out how to do two faces on my own, then learned a beginner solution from a book. Mostly interested in solving new puzzles, I was able to solve every other puzzle I came across on my own until recently (Pyraminx, Ivory Tower, Missing Link way back when, 4x4x4 in high school, Skewb and Square-One and Megaminx in college and grad school, etc.)

Recently I got back into cubing because of all the great new puzzles. (Well, not that I was ever really out of it...) I love and have solved the Helicopter cube and Curvy Copter and Mastermorphix, etc. Haven't quite wrapped my mind around the Master Skewb, Rex Cube, or Face Turning Octohedron yet, they don't seem to have enough room. But I'm getting there...

All of that is not very relevant to speed cubing though. I figured if I'm going to be able to do all of these, I should at least be sub 1:00 on the standard cube. So I started trying for speed about 10 days ago. I'm around 1:40 now, with PBs in the 1:10s and almost always under 2:00 using F2L, and bastardized 4LLL. (I know some of the one look OLLs just from familiarity, and I *don't* know some of the corner OLLs, so I occasionally end up doing beginner sune-sune-sune. And I have to do two A perms to get the E perm still, although I do know all the edge PLLs for two look.) Despite that, my F2L is by far the worst, usually over a minute. (Rough estimate: Cross 10s, F2L 1:10, OLL 20, PLL 10.) But I can see it improving and feel like there will be a jump there. (Minor question: I see a lot about getting good at the moves once the target edge and corner are on the top face [cross on bottom], but I'm slow at finding them and bringing them up, partly because I try to bring them up into "good" positions. Should I not bother with that?) Once I'm sub 1:00 I think I'll learn Roux, I have it feeling it will cater to my strengths. Not sure how fast I really want to get.

I guess that's it for the intro. As for the bad cross? This came up this morning, and I couldn't get anywhere close to a BLD solve: With white up, red forward the edge pieces were:
White left green front
White left orange down
White right blue front
White right red down.

Ugh. Any masters have a suggested cross solve?

Welcome. Here's a really simple guide to get you faster.

Aim for these splits to get down to 60s

Cross: 10s
Corner 1: 3s
Corner 2: 3s
Corner 3: 3s
Corner 4: 3s
Edge 1: 4.5s
Edge 2: 4.5s
Edge 3: 4.5s
Edge 4: 4.5s
LL step 1: 5s
LL step 2: 5s
LL step 3: 5s
LL step 4: 5s

These should all be possible within a few days practice.
Practice only cross until it's 10s.
Then practice until first layer corners until it's 22s
Then practice until middle edges until it's 40s
Then practice LL until the whole solve takes you 60s.

(use this strategy for the rest of the guide. I'm doing this with big cubes right now and it works pretty well)

Ok. Done that? Want to get to Sub45? Practice until you can do the same thing with these splits:

Cross: 9s
Corner 1: 2s
Corner 2: 2s
Corner 3: 2s
Corner 4: 2s
Edge 1: 3s
Edge 2: 3s
Edge 3: 3s
Edge 4: 3s
LL step 1: 4s
LL step 2: 4s
LL step 3: 4s
LL step 4: 4s

These should all be possible within a few days practice.
Practice only cross until it's 9s.
Then practice until first layer corners until it's 17s
Then practice until middle edges until it's 29s
Then practice LL until the whole solve takes you 45s.

Ok. Done that? Want to get to Sub30? Learn F2L and do the same thing for this potential breakdown

Cross: 6s
F2L 1: 3s
F2L 2: 3s
F2L 3: 3s
F2L 4: 3s
LL step 1: 3s
LL step 2: 3s
LL step 3: 3s
LL step 4: 3s

Ok. Done that? Want to get sub25? Learn PLL and shoot for this:

Cross: 5s
F2L 1: 2.5s
F2L 2: 2.5s
F2L 3: 2.5s
F2L 4: 2.5s
OELL: 2.5s
OCLL: 2.5s
PLL: 5s

Ok. Done that? Want to get sub20? Practice some more and shoot for this:

Cross: 4s
F2L 1: 2.25s
F2L 2: 2.25s
F2L 3: 2.25s
F2L 4: 2.25s
OELL: 2s
OCLL: 2s
PLL: 3s

Ok. Done that? Wan to get sub15? Learn OLL and shoot for this:

Cross: 3s
F2L 1: 1.75s
F2L 2: 1.75s
F2L 3: 1.75s
F2L 4: 1.75s
OLL: 3s
PLL: 2s

Ok. Done that? Want to get sub12? Shoot for this:

Cross: 2.5s
F2L 1: 1.5s
F2L 2: 1.5s
F2L 3: 1.5s
F2L 4: 1.5s
OLL: 2s
PLL: 1.5s

Ok. Done that? Want to get sub10? Shoot for this:

Cross: 2s
F2L 1: 1.25s
F2L 2: 1.25s
F2L 3: 1.25s
F2L 4: 1.25s
OLL: 1.75s
PLL: 1.25s

Ok. Done that? Want to get sub9? Shoot for this:

Cross: 1.75s
F2L 1: 1s
F2L 2: 1.25s
F2L 3: 1.25s
F2L 4: 1.25s
OLL: 1.5s
PLL: 1s

Ok. Done that? Want to get sub8? Shoot for this:

Cross: 1.5s
F2L 1: 1s
F2L 2: 1s
F2L 3: 1s
F2L 4: 1.25s
OLL: 1.25s
PLL: 1s

etc

That's exactly what you should be doing. Moving them into 'pairs' (adjacent or distant) is what intuitive slot-solving is about. There are 6 possibilites for each of "edge>top layer" and "corner>top layer", with typically 3 ways of performing each. Master these, for any orientation of the cube, and you'll be doing that "F2L" in 20 secs before you know it...
