i just got a rubik's cube a week ago and i started using the solve one side and then layer by layer method (i don't the technical name). i'm not trying to be a speedcuber, i'm happy with taking 5 or 6 minutes to solve the cube. anyway, the problem i sometimes run into is when i'm trying to solve the middle layer corners (i have already solved one side and the first layer that touches the solved side. and i can usually solve all the middle layer pieces except for 1 or 2 middle corner pieces.) all the middle layer pieces are solved but one (which is in the right spot) except it is backwards. i don't know how to fix this other than just scrambling the cube and pretty much starting over. i included i picture of what i'm talking about (in the pic the bottom side is solved and the whole bottom layer and most of the middle layer. the only things not solved are the one block the arrow is pointing at and the top layer and top side.) if there's an algorithm to fix this problem or anything else that could help me out, i could really use it. any info would be much appreciated.

Welcome to forum, and as a side note, you will want to get faster, it's inevitable. First off, that piece is an edge, not a corner. If you have that case, the way to do it is just to insert another edge into it's place and then re-insert the edge the correct way. So just take any edge on in the top layer and put it in that place. That will move the piece out of it's spot and you can put it in correctly. There are algorithms to do this, but that's probably the best way for you to understand it.

With first layer on the bottom, put the incorrect edge on the right side.

Do R2 U2 F R2 F' U2 R' U R'

Obviously, you probably can't read the notations. It's very simple, just google it.

actually i can read the notations. but i ended up screwing up when trying what masterofthebass had said but ended up fixing what i had screwed up in a different way and solving it. so i'll just have to bookmark this page and try what you (demon parasite) have suggested next time i run into this problem. thanks for the info.

notamaster, I really hope you will end up as a speedcuber, it is much more fun when you can solve the cube in 30 seconds (than in 5 minutes).
Concerning your case, I know exactly what you mean as everyone I am teaching the cube have this issue.
I agree with masterofthebass, you don't need to learn any new algorithm for this, just put any edge of the top layer in this spot as if it was the edge you wanted to fix. It requires a bit of effort to do it but you can do it :)
Elsewher, if you really want to learn an algorithm I suggest that you look at this video (as it may be easier than a formula for you):

I had the same problem when I started cubing.. just do the same algorithm your doing except backwards which is R U' R' U' F' U F but you have to line up the piece with the right color =) hope that helps
