Good morning! My boyfriend has a handful of 3x3s he can complete in moments, of which the mirror cube is by far his favorite. He's got a 3x3 gear cube which he doesn't like at all, doesn't move well and he got too frustrated and gave up on it. He's tried the 4x4 and said he didn't like it much, mostly because the final level solves were so complicated. I'd like to get him something that will give him a new challenge that he'll like.

I was poking around and thought maybe a basic 5x5 or a pyraminx. I was thinking of ultimately getting him the megaminx, but got spooked when he said he hated the gear puzzle. Any ideas would be welcome.

Don't get him a 5x5 if he doesn't like 4x4, it just gets worse. Megaminx isn't very similar to a gear cube and is about as easy to solve as a 3x3, it just takes longer, so its not a bad idea. I suspect he would like a pyraminx too.

Since he likes mirror cubes, which are shape-shifting, he might also like a square-1 or an x-cube, the latter of which isn't solved competitively but is still a fun challenge. Hope this gives you some ideas

Hi,

if he likes normal 3x3x3 Rubik's cube, you can actually give him sticker variants of it: Supercube or Void cube (I would say both are harder than classical 3x3x3).

If he likes shape-shifters, you can give him the Fisher cube (shape-shifting Supercube that is trying to fool you). You can also give him 3x3x5 (3x3x3 and 3x3x2 combined, I would say harder than classical 3x3x3).

If you want to give him something easier than classical 3x3x3, you can go for a Pyraminx or Dino cube.

P.S. it is really hard (and unfair) to pick only a few suggestions. You can also let him choose first (or get him a puzzle you like). For this purpose, I would recommend you/him to try pCubes simulator: http://twistypuzzles.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=27054

I would suggest getting him a 3x3 shape mod, such as a fisher cube or a barrel cube or a windmill cube... basically any 3x3x3 mod that you think he might like
