Corners First? Quick question.

Hello,
My dad learnt the whole 3x3x3 cube intuitively back in the 80's. He does all the corners first then puts the edges in place. Are there any advanced methods that do this, if so what are they called? I am just asking because he has picked up his cube again and has never seen anyone else solve it in this way.
