Just out of curiosity, what are the prizes given at some of the competitions? Please post the competition, the entrance fee, and the prize (and if it's just for 1st or 1st/2nd/3rd).

Well, you know about US Open, but for the other two competitions I've been to, it was a huge contrast.

Beijing Open it was a DIY or a Sq-1 for first place in all the events, 2nd and 3rd for 3x3.

Guangdong Open, it was a certificate and trophy for top 3 finish, medal and bag of puzzles (full of DIYs and whatnot) for 1st places, medal for 2nd and 3rd for 3x3.

Let's just say there's a gap in funding. :P

At the two Caltech competitions I've been to, the prizes were assorted bags of things (random objects for the first, candy for the second). It's quite fun to make and receive them, but I'm quite partial to official-looking certificates myself, which was what I received at Captain's Cove 2007.

Maybe it's just the competitions I've been to, but winning puzzles or a trophy/medal seems a bit odd to me...

Lyon Open :
1st : 150 euros
2nd and 3rd : 100 euros
entrance fee : 0 euros

Lyon Winter Open :
1st and 2nd : A Stackmat timer
entrance fee : 6 euros

Let's see what I can remember...
Pleasantville: Certificates top 3, cubesmith stickers in the appropriate puzzle for winner of each event (except magic-8 strings, and pyraminx-3x3 stickers). For 3x3, top 3 win stickers, and winner wins a Rubik's Revolution.

Virginia: Medals for the winners and certificates for top 3. Plus the top 3 of each get their choice of a UFO and a rubiks 2x2.

Worlds: Medal and certificate and special cube with packaging signed by rubik. Plus money for winners and top 3 of some events, and trophies that were like vases or something

Trumbull, Captains Cove: Certificates for top 3 for each event

Rutgers Spring 07: Cube trophies and certificates for top 3 in each event

Cornell: what Jonathan said

Rutgers Fall 06: No idea

US Nats 06: Cube trophies for top 3 in each event (a 6x6 trophy for 1st in 3x3)

Rutgers Spring 06: I remember there being some stickers as prizes, plus an eastsheen 2x2 for the magic winner and a cubesmith t-shirt for the overall winner?

Rutgers Fall 05: No idea--I think someone won an eastsheen 2x2 for something?

Yeah, good memory Tim. I thought that it was 16 strings originally so i started to do double stringing on an original Rubik's magic and i ended up running out halfway through the stringing!! lol. so i had to use cube4you ones the rest of the way. its still my best magic and its a great competition prize!

Caltech Fall 07: $3 entry fee, a bag of candy. and a card that says something. Both of which i never got, lol.
