Hi

Is 3-Style the same as BH? To me, 3-Style means freestyle 3-cycles, meaning they can be optimized for speed, or for number of moves, or for recall time or even OH execution speed. While BH is a specific algorithm for each case, or at least the specific goal to use a move optimal alg for each case (and get so good at it that you do it braindead). This clearly isn't freestyle...

So is there more nuance to this? I ask because the speedsolving wiki claims they are the same:

You have it right. BH was the earliest form of freestyle. Later, good people put more effort in to learn optimized algorithms for almost all cases that were better than commutators. I'd say it's all freestyle, but BH is just a particularly non-optimal form of freestyle.

I personally still use mostly BH for my solves, but I have replaced a small percentage of the algs with speed-optimized ones. My solves tend to be fewer moves than most freestyle solutions, but unfortunately they're much slower. (Especially since I'm so slow anyway LOL.)
