Hello,

I am a beginner with the Rubik's cube, having been able to solve it for a couple of weeks.

I would like to know if there is any better method of orienting the yellow corners?

This is the general method I am using (the "beginners method?)

1. Create white cross in correct position
2. Fix white corners
3. Arrange second layer edge pieces
4. Create yellow cross
5. Place cross in correct position
6. Position yellow corners at correct positions
7. Orient all the yellow corners

The 7th step I am doing through a long series of:

Ri Di R D

This takes quite some time and feels in-efficient, at worse 64 turns.

I am wondering if there is any better method to fix the corners without destroying the already placed yellow cross?

Thanks a lot for your quick reply.

I will check out the Youtube link!

Thanks also for the names of the method steps.

Better method: swap steps 5 and 7.

For the new step 5 (old step 7), you can use R U R' U R U2 R' to orient the corners.
0 yellow corners: move a yellow sticker to LUF using U moves and do alg
1 yellow corner: move it to UFL and do alg
2 yellow corners: move a yellow sticker to FUL and do alg
Repeat that until you have all corners oriented.

For step 6, you'll need to use a new alg, R' F R' B2 R F' R' B2 R2.
If you have two corner stickers that are the same colour and on the same face, hold them on the back and do the alg.
If you don't, then do the alg, and you should then have a pair of the same colour on the same face.

Step 7: another new alg, M2 U M U2 M' U M2
If you have a solved edge, hold it on the back face.
If you don't, do the alg, and that should solve on edge.

if you have the patience, this video will help you. the method you're using is definitely not the best for speed solving, even with the skills you'll learn in this video, but commutators and conjugates are vastly impotent if you ever want to get into FMC(fewest moves competition), or any type of BLD (blind solving). its also pretty nice to understand how the cube works so you can sit down and mess around with it without being confined to a specific method.

Thanks for the further replies, all very helpful!

I do not think I will aim at any blind solve or fewest moves at the nearest future, however it is interesting to solve it faster. My record time at this moment is about 1.30 minutes and I would like to make it below 60 seconds at least.

haha, you'll be surprised at how quickly your goals change. also something i failed to mention before but could be useful: most algorithms you'll use in more advanced speed solving methods are made up of commutators and conjugates. knowing how they work will help memorization of algs.

That might be so. :)

Thanks for your reply and suggestion. Do you know how much, in comparision to current method, the reversion of these steps together with new algorithms makes the overall solve time better? In turns or other measurement.

Today I use these algorithms, which except for the 7th step ("CO"), feels quite good.

4. Edge Orientation (EO)

yellow edges in line: F R U Ri Ui Fi
yellow edges in L shape: F U R Ui Ri Fi

5. Edge Permutation (EP)

R U Ri U R U U Ri U

6. Corner Permutation (CP)

U R Ui Li U Ri Ui L (Possible more than once)

7. Corner Orientation (CO)

Ri Di R D (many times)
