Hi everybody.
What's the best algorithm for middle-layer?
Let's say, this situation:
imagecube.php

R' U' R' U' R' U R U R
or
U' F' U F U R U' R'
or
Anything else...?

Thanks, Nadav.

as an extension of my knowledge of F2L I would encourage you to turn it so that the Green face is your Front face. In that case you could use this algorithm. U' L' U' L U F U F'

If you pay attention to it enough you can develop an intuitive sense of how this works. It is a very simple idea of matching the corner to the edge to create a corner edge pair.

If you really dissect it you can see that U' L' U' L sets up the corner and edge pair such that it can be easily inserted. The corner piece you are manipulating is on the upper layer, and directly above where it will end up. A white sticker faces you, green up, and red left. If you notice there is the edge you are trying to pair it with on the upper layer, on the right. It has red facing up. As you do the next move that both joins these pieces together and inserts them into their correct position, you will see how the first F move joins the pairs, the U move rotates them into their correct slot which was just rotated to the Up layer, then the F' move simply restores the cube, except with a correct corner edge pair. This joining of the corner edge pair, and eventual insertion is the cornerstone of intuitive F2L.

EDIT: Fix something, also I like the first alg you presented there, but it is a little lacking on the intuitive front... So I didn't not use any part of it.

Ramble off....

Thanks for the reply.
Your algorithm works well, but I can't understand why is it better than, say, U' F' U F U R U' R'
(both has 8 moves)

I also found this website: http://www.opticubes.com/cubing/f2l/f2l_2.php
They have a 7 moves solution in there, but I think an algorithm uses only U and R is faster,
so you better of with R' U' R' U' R' U R U R, Am I right?

It is no better. It is the same thing actually, I was just trying to put it into context so maybe you could see shortcuts. You won't have to setup the cube to this position to solve an edge, you can happen upon what look like intermediate steps and pick up the algorithm from there.

I like the aglorithm of Fusty a bit more because it has a nice fluence in it. Personally I do it a bit different. Green is your front face.
U' L' U L d R U' R'
I do U' with my left index finger, L' with my left hand U with right index finger and L with my hand. Then I'm holding the up layer with my index finger and thumb and with my middle finger and my ring finger I do the move d. Then you can put the pair in the slot with R U' R'

I like B' R2 U' R' U R2 B
do the B' at the beginning with your third finger, then there's a half-regrip before the R2 B at the and, do the final B with your first finger

if the RB slot is open you can just ignore the Bs

Wow.. Nice alg. short, fast, easy-to-understand-shortcuts.
Awesome. I'll give it a shot.

Thanks for the comments everybody.

Oh yeah... I forgot when you're not constrained you can pair in that direction as well. It's these sorts of things I miss out on in my F2L.
The only really good answer is to cube more, and you'll discover some pretty wacky things that work well.
