Not an official WCA competition, but certainly not off topic, hmm...

Yesterday (Nov 14) at the University of Science and Techonology Beijing there was an inter-university cube competition. Cubing is getting quite big in China, and there are several university cubing clubs. This competition was organized as a friendly contest among the clubs.

The events were: guess the solve time, CFOP teamsolving, speed disassemble-reassemble, team BLD, match the scramble, and standard 3x3 speedsolve.

The teams from ten universities in attendance: University of Science and Technology Beijing, Peking University, Beijing University of Technology, Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture, Beijing Information Technology College, Beijing University of Agriculture, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Beijing University of Chemical Technology and Beijing Union University. A pre-competition poll* showed Peking University as the favorite.

Some schools also brought in non-student ringers, which I found unfair, because the PKU team were ringers to begin with.

The first event was a fun one that I hadn't seen before. With the stackmat display covered, competitors did standard 3x3 speedsolve then had to guess the time. Their result was the difference between their guess and the actual solve time. Rankings were calculated by average time difference across five solves. A question for the audience, would this have been better handled as a percentage difference of the solve time, rather than a straight time? My assumption is percentage would be better.

The second event was CFOP team solve. Four members from each team participating, one per each of C F O and P. That division of labor was particularly silly when a scramble came up that had both a 0-move yellow cross and a 1-move white cross. This event had a notably high number of DNFs where the final competitor screwed up PLL.

The third event was disassemble-reassemble. The event required one person to fully disassemble a cube, separating all parts, before handing off the core to a teammate to reassemble the cube. There was no restriction on turning, so everyone just reassembled then solved. In this event my teammates failed spectacularly, choosing their tightest cube and complaining afterward that they couldn't get it apart. The winning team from BUAA won with a time of 60.05, having the cube fully disassembled in only four seconds.

Next was team BLD, where my teammate and I, with almost no practice, won with a nice ZZ solve in 1:09.

The fifth event was match-the-scramble, where I got second place with a 1:22. Not bad, given that at most I tried this once or twice back in '06. First place was Ren Yi, who posted a video of a 30-some second match-the-scramble video here recently.

Last was three rounds of speedsolve. Requiring a different competitor each round, not only did each team have to pick their three fastest solvers, they had to match them against who they thought the other teams would pick.

Points were awarded for each event. BIT ended in first, BUAA second, and PKU third.
