I use Fridrich method, and today I just watched Badmephisto's F2L guide (both parts). I usually average around 40 seconds, but ever since I watched the guide, I haven't gotten a single time under a minute yet. I suspect this is normal, because he said it would make my times worse for a little. But if I want to compete next week at the San Francisco Open, should I keep on working on Badmephisto's method, or should I switch back to my way for F2L until after the competition?

Sorry about all these F2L questions I've been asking over the past few days, I just really REALLY want to improve it.

Practice, practice, practice. That seriously is a key step for learning Fridrich F2L.
Rewatch, rewatch, rewatch. That's what I and several other do/have done with his videos. Go over them again and make sure you're not forgetting anything.

Tell me, tell me, tell me. How are you doing your first two layers right now?

F2L is part of the fridrich method, so if you just learned it today, you have not been using the Fridrich method thus far.

I suppose you meant beginner's method?
Getting 40 second averages with beginner's method is quite a feat.

F2L takes some time getting into... 1 week is probably not good enough for practice time. Just take averages using both methods before the competition and decide based on that. After the competition though, stick with F2L. it will be worth it. cheers

yes 40seconds for beginners method is quite fast... with beginners method i can get to the high 30s

f2l does take time to learn and master. i still have to practice looking ahead. i find that i cant track pieces very well.

No, I've been using Fridrich, the thing is, I just keep twisting edges and corners until I get one of six or seven possible cases that I know instantly, and I perform it. It's very inefficient, but it works.

This is great! I just got a 38.68 using the method, after getting the following times, in a row:

1:01.12
57.18
52.35
46.19

I think with more practice, I might start getting some sub-35 times soon.

EDIT: After another 50 second time, I just got a 35.41 second time. Hm, inconsistent, but interesting.

While doing speed solves is great, while learning F2L, try to slow down during a solve and watch what's happening. Find a corner and an edge pair, and work on getting them together correctly.

I spent several minutes trying to explain possibilities, but I can't stay on and struggled to do so. Until tomorrow, I recommend taking badmephisto's advice, and also rewatching his videos.

If it helps, find a corner, insert it incorrectly, and then try to line up the edge so that you can form a pair. If the edge is inverted, put the corner back down, and put the edge in an empty slot somewhere. Take the edge back out the other way (if you put the edge in using the F face with the FR slot, take it out using the R face), and trying pairing them again. <------ This is why intuitive F2L is better. Understand what's happening, so that you can do this from all angles. Don't memorize 'FR slot, R Face', just watch and try to understand what's happening. This is how algorithms are eliminated.

Keeping working at it, and there's a 99.9999999% chance that you'll be using this for the competition. =)

Get a look at some of Badmephisto's random tips and tricks.
Some are pretty useful, like "corner liberation" and stuff.

But, you have to realize, that nothing we say can actually reduce your F2L times dramatically.
When it comes to F2L, it's all about practice.

Also, it is useful to learn some algorithms for annoying cases. A good intuitive F2L is awesome, but refining your method by including fast algorithms that make your life easier makes it perfect.

It is indeed normal that your times will go up at first. Since that is the case, take your time to solve F2L in the beginning, so you can locate your next pair while solving the first one.

Good luck!

So, it's two days since I first watched that guide, if I remember correctly. I'm back to my normal average (around 40 seconds) but no better than that. I guess it's just practice that I need to do now to get my times lower.

stick with F2L. it will be worth it. cheers

About F2L, there is no (what I know) good video tutorial about emty slots, working corner, stuck pieces. It would be nice with the most of these cases in one video. There is probably no better teacher here than you here, badmephisto. If you shall do more videos in the future, maybe this can be one of them?!

have you not seen his other videos about advanced F2L tecniques?

Also, it funny reading this thread as this was originally posted 4 months ago and byu was saying he stuggles to get a speedsolve under 60 seconds, now he is getting 10 second solves and sub minute blind solves, not to mention 4x4 and 5x5 bld successes too.

In 4 months, that's good going.

Yes, of cause I have. But I mean a video with a lot of different emty slot/shortcut cases. There is a lot more than in his videos.

And byu, from 60 seconds down do where you are now in just a few months, very impressive!

i don't get this thread. allegedly, byu is averaging 40 seconds, but his signature says that he's gotten 10 seconds.

EDIT: nevermind. i just realized that this is a very old thread.
