Uproar after in the speedcubing community after WCA announcement.
Thursday, July 06, 2023
On Thursday, June 22nd the World Cube Association (also known as WCA) Board announced “Changes to the Recognition of Regions” effective immediately. These changes included changing the name of Taiwan to Chinese Taipei, Macau to Macau, China and Hong Kong to Hong Kong, China.[1]
The Board stated that their reasoning behind the decision was to align with the International Olympics Committee standards. The also mentioned that “taken the time to consult with key stakeholders in the local communities” however they have not mentioned who these stakeholders are apart from Chinese delegates. The organization did not contact the Taiwan Cube Association.
The announcement stated that the WCA Sports Organization Team proposed the changes in hopes of being recognized by the Chineese government as a sporting organization. In forum threads WCA staff members mentioned that the changes were also made in an attempt to resume the organizing of official WCA competitions in China however it has not been made clear exactly as to why the WCA is unable to do so.
The announcement received significant backlash and on the 24th of June the announcement was update stating that “The WCA Board apologizes for the confusion that has arisen so far regarding this announcement. The Board and WSOT are working to consolidate the context and justifications for this decision. We expect this report to be available in the next few days.” This contradicts their original statement where it was said the decision was made “after careful consideration”.
Taiwanese speedcubers posted their thoughts on how they feel disrespected by the decision and how it was made just to cater for the Chinese government.,[2] On June 26th, the Taiwan ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that it would be “instructing the[ir] Los Angeles office to contact the WCA headquarters to urge the restoration of Taiwan's name.”[3] Currently no updates on the situation have been announced. Then on the 27th of June the Taiwan Cube Association which is recognized by the WCA as the Regional Organization for Taiwan made a statement about the matter. They stated that “the TWCA will make every effort to protect the rights of Taiwanese cubers” and that they are “actively engaging in communication with individuals within the WCA and planning to collect opinions from the Taiwanese community to reach a consensus and represent the voices of the majority of Taiwanese cubers.”[4]
Later on the 29th of June board member Blake Thompson, posted an update to the WCA forum.[5] The announcement addressed some common concerns, however the public was not satisfied and still demand more details and reasoning. As of the 6th of July no updates have been posted and the situation remains the same.
