Cubing Nostalgia: When was the ‘golden age’ of cubing

It was pretty funny when magnetic cubes were still illegal for WCA competitions. Stickerless were also illegal.

Cubing Nostalgia: When was the ‘golden age’ of cubing

There is no question at all that 1981-1984 were the golden age of cubing. It's the only time in history when every single house in North America had at least one cube and usually more than one, mini 3x3 decorations for the Christmas tree, mini 3x3 keychains, talk at almost every dinner party...

Petrus is like, so dead now.

So what happens when other people want to chime in as well? Is the thread still dead then? I think the definition of a thread is a bunch of people exchanging ideas.

    Anyone know this technique please?

If you want to avoid dementia you must take pro-active steps, since it is caused primarily by heavy metals in the food supply, you need to take daily heavy metal detox products like modified citrus pectin, fulvic acid, selenium, NAC, and cilantro. Citricleanse and Amalgaclear are my favorite...

    Anyone know this technique please?

That might be it; the one I recall had a slightly different cover but it could be the same book.

    Anyone know this technique please?

You are using Waterman's method. It is also the method I used intuitively in the 1980's without even knowing about Waterman. To be more clear you are using the simple version of Waterman's method. Your method was not in the Simple Solution to the Rubik's Cube (which had an absolutely horrible...

    What's your favourite 3x3 method?

My favorite 3x3 method is the 'no-algorithms' method I came up with in the early 1980's.

what is the hardest puzzle in your opinion and why?

In the 1980's I solved the 3x3, 4x4, pyraminx, megaminx, all without any help, although it was hard. There were, however, two puzzles I was unable to solve without help, the first was square-1, which I could solve to the point of the entire cube solved except having 2 edge pieces swapped, and...

RSF WR Timofei Tarasenko Megaminx 22.49s single

It's still a world record, just like in freediving where you have four different organizations that govern & ratify records.

New category, 4x4 vs. 3BLD. Times are basically the same. Choose your category.

The New Method / Substep / Concept Idea Thread

LLEF, CFCE and other different ordering of solving last layer always ends the same, the recognition time is much worse than standard OLL/PLL which has fast recognition. So it is not useful, to count moves, number of algs, etc, the main thing is the recognition time.

    2x2 theory for cbl

This is somewhat similar to something I suggested some time back which is essentially Ortega where you orient both top & bottom simultaneously, so, like CBL you separate the layers, then orient both at the same time and then permute. Likely not worth learning ,vs. EG.

Can I break the 2×2 Moroccan NR in just 1 month?

It is a tall task. Beating 3.13 without 1-looking the solve is very hard, without one looking you might possibly get low 3's but I do not think it is really possible to get a 2.XX average without 1-looking. Unfortunately 1-looking while knowing only CLL is hard because it averages more than 5...

How many solve can you do in 1 Hour?

What's it called? Real man's average? Used to be a thing, I think it was 12 solves including scramble, fastest total time wins. There were posts from maybe 2017-2018 about this.

    New 2x2 method proposal

Sorry, I checked my notes, actually the average movecount for an EG face is 2.97.

    New 2x2 method proposal

    Ortega/EG (a face) distance positions Cumulative total 0 2654 0.62% 1 32828 4.23% 2 26354 21.28% 3 057908 77.29% ------> 77% of scrambles have a 3-move or better solution 4 32588 99.95% So about 21% of scrambles have a 0, 1 or 2 move face for EG. If you never get a 1 or 2 mover then you...

    New 2x2 method proposal

The first step of EG does not take 4-6 moves, it takes an average of 3.8. With the proposed method I think the average would drop to around 3.0 - 3.2.

    New 2x2 method proposal

The last top 2x2 solver I talked to said they average 12.7 moves, primarily by 1-looking 3-4 solutions and choosing the one with move cancellations.
