When you are bit, I find that smacking them makes it swell worse.
It squeezes whatever "poison" they use to ease the bite (the itchy stuff) into you even more.
Try flicking them away.

To relieve the itching, I use ammonia. Put it in a small spray bottle, like the ones used for perfume. Spray a little bit on the area and leave it on. Ammonia doesn't smell very good, but it's effective.

I pinch the area. It relieves the itch for a while, but it comes back after 5 minutes or so

Well, if you can, try the ammonia method, or else rubbing alcohol—that helps a little, too.
