The first child is 2 years old
The second child is 2 years old
The product of 2×2 and the sum of 2+2 are the same
But them saying oh I get it fools me. Just because they have no clue then they know immediately because the other one does not know is crazy
Renslay

No, (2,2) is wrong. In that case, this would have been the situation:
First mathematician: "Because I got 4 as the product, it's either 1*4 or 2*2, I can't decide. I DON'T KNOW."
Renslay
Renslay
Second mathematician: "I got 4 as addition, so it's either 1+3 or 2+2. But if it's 1+3, the first mathematician would got a prime number (1*3=3), and he would immediately announce he knows.
Renslay
Renslay
But he does not know. Therefore, I KNOW!"

But this is not what happened.

My brain is fried right now
What is the answer?
Renslay
Renslay
I let you think about it a bit more, and if you'd still like, I can give you the answer tomorrow. :)

Sure! About to go to bed, and planning picnic tomorrow. I will more than likely be here at the same time as now!

A dragon has two kids and gives a math question to a couple smart dudes. Nether of them know the answer, until they know neither of them knows the answer. That is the largest clue I am working with
Jared Burkhart
Jared Burkhart
The sum of their ages is the same as the product of their ages. The variables are now restricted to a select amount of numbers that their product and sum are the same.
Jared Burkhart
Jared Burkhart
However, there are still issues here. There are multiple variants to the sum equaling the product. If they get this wrong, then they both are eaten by the dragon. So the variants are again limited to even a smaller amount of numbers
Jared Burkhart
Jared Burkhart
Since the dragon has two children, I assume they are twins. However, this is still wrong, seeing that with the vast majority of numbers there are, the sum will always have more variants than the product

I have no idea
Renslay
Renslay
They are not necessarily twins - nothing suggests they are twins (although nothing suggests they are not twins either...)
And the sum of their ages are not necessarily the same as the product of their ages! The dragon not necessarily gave them the same number.

I admit it's not an easy puzzle!

But there is a perfectly logical reasoning that leads to a single unique solution.

I will show you later today.
Jared Burkhart
Jared Burkhart
Yay!
Given these hints, I may think a bit harder!
She has no children.
Jared Burkhart
Jared Burkhart
The logic? The fact neither of them know how to calculate the riddle and then know the answer just because they heard the other does not know the answer is the biggest hint.
Jared Burkhart
Jared Burkhart
Since neither know the answer, the dragon tried fooling the two to test their value. Were they trespassing to invade her privacy, or were they just simply walking through? Their value was tested by giving them a riddle that made no sense to either of them. I just got lost with my explanation
Renslay
Renslay
Nope! There is a perfectly valid solution, a pair of integers. There is no "tricky" answer like "you have no children" or "both of them are 0 years old" or similar.
Jared Burkhart
Jared Burkhart
Integers! How could I forget that? Wow
Renslay
Renslay
Uhm, that's not the answer. :) i still haven't told you what the numbers actually are.
Jared Burkhart
Jared Burkhart
Yeah, I kinda quit
I thought it over so many times. It is probably super simple. I tend to over complicate things. You can give the answer now!
