I also Cachy my OS it's pretty good but I never managed to figure out how to install things to linux from the internet. Wine and proton are hard carrying me and I don't like the quality they provide.
@SpeedCubingLord oh okay, yeah Mint is great for old laptops (my record was installing it on a 20 years old laptop that had difficulties running Windows 8.1 at a decent speed. Mint made it work like a charm)
@HellHeater wdym installing things to Linux? Like using the command-line to install packages? And yeah, true that Wine and Proton aren't always top quality and don't always work for everything, but most of the time with a few tweaks and fixing missing libraries/fonts/Visual C redistribs/enabling virtual desktop it work fine. Was it causing problem for a specific software?
No command line for packages are pretty simple. I just can't for the life of me install from a tar.gz file. Usually I try for like 15 minutes going back and forth in the guide and give up and install the windows version.
oh so you mean when building stuff manually that isn't in the standard packages? usually even if it's not in the main package repository on Arch/CachyOS there's sometimes a version of it in the AUR so you can install it from there (usually there's a link to it on the software's documentation page tho)
Still, I don't know how to get a software from a tar.gz file. Also, I use obscure software that works on hopes and prayers very often which is annoying to get on linux. For example I have no idea how to install MC5D or even MC4D on my cachyos.
Yeah, I was never able to install from tar.gz files either, and the worst part is nobody would give me a clear answer. I usually just find it on the aur or flatpak when I run into that
@HellHeater usually installing software from a tar.gz is for developer mostly, for building it yourself (except, of course, if it's a prebuilt software that is just compressed into a .tar.gz, for example the War Thunder Client).
Like most of the time if you find say a github project that offer a .tar.gz, they'll also offer a AUR/flatpak/appimage/snap package to install. What is MC4/5D tho?
