A rediscovered 3x3 mechanism that can make outer layers slower than inner slices

Vid is out now! Ended up being quite long, but I wanted to talk about everything related to this project. Feel free to ask me anything about it :) Discord server for the project

A rediscovered 3x3 mechanism that can make outer layers slower than inner slices

I realize I should give an update here, I have practically finished my improved version, waiting for a small order with some magnets to be added and I'll need to add stickers. Due to the 3D-printed pieces I will also have to do a bit of break-in while waiting. Hopefully I'll be able to release a...

A rediscovered 3x3 mechanism that can make outer layers slower than inner slices

I actually ordered a bambu labs a1 mini just now :P I want to get into 3D-printing for puzzle making/modding in general, so at most I'll probably ask around for advice to get the best print quality possible. Gonna be learning 3D-modeling now and try to make a 3x3 shell that goes on top of a gan...

A rediscovered 3x3 mechanism that can make outer layers slower than inner slices

Turns out, to nobody's surprise I suppose, that Oskar made this in the past. He's truly the Euler of puzzle design haha. I think it's still good to bring up the possibility of making a proper speedcube version of this, as standard hardware wasn't as developed as it is nowadays. Magnets weren't...

A rediscovered 3x3 mechanism that can make outer layers slower than inner slices

Thanks! I try to explain it in my video, essentially, A,B and C represents the friction between the 3 layers. In standard 3x3s, we only have B and C, A = 0. But to get the effect where we can do slice turns with one hand, we need A > B=C (I believe we don't need A>B+C, but I might be wrong). My...

A rediscovered 3x3 mechanism that can make outer layers slower than inner slices

Hi everyone! In this thread, I want to show you a puzzle I have recently constructed that serves as a proof of concept for a new mechanism I've come up with. This 3x3 differs from the standard mechanism by using a 2x2 core with the corners extended and the gaps filled in with edges and...

CEOR-Zero - a new variant of CEOR that has even better ergonomics and lower movecount!

Aight, done this now. Unfortunately I set the search depth a bit low, only up to 11 moves but this resulted in 1604 states not having their solution found. Assuming they're solvable in 12 moves though, this gives an average of 9.306 using only <R, r, U, u, S> including the final z/z' rotation...

CEOR-Zero - a new variant of CEOR that has even better ergonomics and lower movecount!

https://edde.github.io/CEORtrainer/ I have now made a trainer! The code for general CPFB exists but I want to test it more before "releasing" it, 0-move FB is also of higher priority. A bit crude and simple, but it works as intended. Takes a couple seconds to load at the start as the prune...

Could this be the most optimal OH method? Roux with CP-first and the proposal of sequential OCLS

Aight so an update on all this: I haven't managed to find a good "rule" for the sequential ocls stuff, I did an estimate where I ran through L5C algs (so, "ignoring" FR/BR edges) in order to solve all the corners and compared inserting DBR -> "OCLS" vs OCLS (DFR or DBR) ->OCLS, and ignoring...

Could this be the most optimal OH method? Roux with CP-first and the proposal of sequential OCLS

Something I just realized is that, what we're mainly concerned about are the cases where some CO influencing when inserting first pair, it could be possible to run through all the cases and rank them by how many moves we gain by doing sequential OCLS. That would not only give a clear "roadmap"...

Could this be the most optimal OH method? Roux with CP-first and the proposal of sequential OCLS

Yeah it's a bit of a "shoot for the stars, land on the moon" type of idea. While a system would be the holy grail, the simple knowledge that you're technically doing an OCLS alg when inserting the first pair is by itself something that can go a long way. Consider these 4 summer variation cases...

Could this be the most optimal OH method? Roux with CP-first and the proposal of sequential OCLS

With the discovery of 0-move CP, CP-first methods for OH solving have gotten further optimized and hopefully, more people will be interested in these methods. However, the main CP-first method, CEOR, is not the only one. As many may (and have) noticed, after solving CPFB we can finish the solve...

CEOR-Zero - a new variant of CEOR that has even better ergonomics and lower movecount!

Thanks! You're welcome :) I hope people gives it a chance now that there's a much smaller "gap" between standard CP solving and 0-move CP. Before these new tracing methods, there were a strong argument that the complexity of the tracing would make it not worth it, as you'll need to not only do...

Sorry! I didn't know it was possible for people to generate permanent invite links 😅 I've updated the original post and the link in the tutorial.
