Hi there!

After about 6 months posting on the forums I've finally decided to introduce myself although I've done it already if you mix my first posts in other threads on the forums

My name is Raúl, I'm 30-all years old and I work as a software developer manager, mainly web development for e-leaning but also some other things as a freelance. I live in Madrid, Spain

I first had access to a cube in the 1980s, and got as far as F2L and EO of the last layer, very few hard to find tutorials and no youtube back then, so I got bored and just forgot about it almost 30 years.

In summer 2011 I went to Budapest and saw a lot of Rubick's cubes but although I was tempted I passed on buying one, however something started itching inside me.

I ordered a couple of cubic things (I just can't call them cubes anymore) on dx.com, a 3x3x3 and a 5x5x5, as the 3x3x3 was both lock and pop prone I learnt beginners and as soon as it definitely stuck I learnt how to do the 5x5x5 and practiced both 5x5x5 and 3x3x3 on the 5x5x5.

Between April and May IIRC, I decided to learn Fridich my goal back then was to be just sub 1:00 and as soon as a stickerless Zhanchi and Guhong arrived I got there in no time, that was in August.

I also ordered a Megaminx (which I loved and took a lot of time from 3x3x3), a Pyra that I haven't learnt a method yet although I can solve it, a 4x4x4 and a 6x6x6 and a 2x2x2. I can solve them all now although I still mix the parities on the even big cubes.

On 3x3x3 I started pushing a bit more when Marcel told me about the weekly competitions, I'm pushing to be sub 30 right now and just can't stop practicing whenever I get some spare time at home, which isn't very often, but oh well. I even bought a mini Zhanchi to take always in the pocket of my coat :)

I learnt Old Pochmann a couple of weeks ago but haven't get to memo the cube yet, I'll try it very soon. I also like to start practicing OH, but I'm averaging like 2 minutes and can't see how to even half it, but I guess practice will get me there.

And now, after that brick of an introduction, I need to brag about my first Ao100 of the year, I broke most of my PBs

Mean of 3: 25.81
Ao5: 26.81
Ao12: 28.54
Ao100: 31.08

Yay!

Hi Raoul (the ú is too much work for me ;) ),

Welcome to the forum. LOL. I don't have a Megaminx. Is that a lot of fun too? I guess I will just have to order one and find out.

About those time.. Nice.. A0100 31 seconds that is fast man! You have gone through a speed barriere. I guess you will be faster than me soon.. Right now I am focussing on color neutral so times are not my first priority anymore..

Hi.

With that avatar, I thought you were Irish :fp What do you mean about mixing the parities on the even big cubes? You can use the same alg for both 4x4 and 6x6 (and even 8x8).

It's pretty fun.

Different spelling, same name. Raul is also ok, many people in Spain are too lazy and write it that way ;)

Is very similar to 3x3x3, a very long F2L and a slightly more complex last layer, very easy to do with beginners, though

Being CN will probably be my next focus, about the times I've been lucky today, let's see if the improved times stick. My objective is not to be faster than you, is having as much fun as you do!

Well, my english should give away my nationality faster than y avatar :p, the four leaf clover avatar has been with me for a very long time (13 years) in Spain it also means luck which is kind of apropriate in cubing :)

I rarely solve even cubes, i meant that I sometimes do the correct parity algorythm, sometimes the wrong one and sometimes something close to a parity algorythm which messes up my cube :p

Sorry for bumping my own thread but I just wanted to ask for advice and to have my thread alive for my first competition (in a week and a half)

I haven't been able to break the PBs in the first post of this thread until yesterday when I finally found out that a lubed cube is great, I'll try to do an Ao100 to see if I finally break that one. I had almost zero time on January due to several real life problems and although I had a good average once in a while afterwards my consistency was gone I could average 29 and 35 the very same day.

Watching my time being static for so long confused me and I decided to step away from just speed for a while.

I've tried BLD and I like it, OP / OP as of now but I'm learning Turbo edges right now and will learn 3 style and big cubes BLD as soon as I get fluent with the previous step. I DNF about a little more than half the of the times I try and average like 6-7 (2-3 memo) minutes, I suck :p
I've tried 4x4x4, about 3-4 minutes, again I suck.
I've tried pyra, around 30 secs but I think I can get better easily, meanwhile, I suck.
I've noticed I've forgotten Ortega so I need to practice 2x2x2 and relearn it to try not tu suck too much. (was around 16s Avg a couple of months ago)

On my upcoming comp I've registered on 3x3x3, 2x2x2, Pyra and 3BLD, the comp is in 10 days, so here's my question:

Which event do you think I can improve the most in such a short time, practicing around 1h a day?

I mean, should I focus on BLD, pyra or 2x2x2?

I think you can gain the most in 2 X 2. Just repeat the few algoritms a few hundred times and you will be sub 12 in a day.

So true, I've been relearning ortega (Trivia: Did you know that in spain we keep track of several last_names and Ortega is my 4th one?) for the last couple of days and practicing and over 25 timed solves I've done a 9.23 single, 11.41 Ao5 and 11.61 Ao12, let´s see if I can lower that on friday (I don't think so but I'll try)

I'm gonna practice some pyra solves today And will try to at least solve once blindfold for the next three days, we'll see :)

I'm not good at short term memory, I'm very good at long term one, though, but you can do an experiment, write down a list of 20 random letters and try memorizing them (you can help yourself grouping them, making a word out of every 2, etc. ) if you can remember them, you can solve a cube blindfolded. That said I'll probably fail to do so in the comp, but eventually I'll succeed :)

I have no idea how my times will be, I guess 30 +- 10 could be an acceptable spectrum for 3x3 but I don't have a clue on how nervous or focused will I be, we'll find out soon enough :p

Speaking of 3BLD, I'm still trying to learn the lettering system. How long should this take?
Edit: I don't think this is the right place to post this. I will be posting this on another thread instead.

Hey there!

BLD?

Oh man no way for me.. I have trouble even memorizing the algorithms of the PLLs I want to learn lol forgetting one as I learn another. If I memorize BLD I am afraid I forget the entire cube itself *giggle*
