Alright I just thought I might post this thread as I am maybe going to seriously try and get faster at the 4x4.I dont practice but my times vary from 1:40 to 2:10 :(
I personally think my 3x3 is slow.. with no lookahead on the cross being a problem.
My normal breakdown is around is:
Centers:20-25 seconds
Edge pairing(I use 2 edge pairing btw):50 seconds
3x3 stage:30 seconds

So what would be a good breakdown to reach these times.. and where should I focus??
Thanks for any tips

eh what about sub1? i'm sub 1:20 on the 4x4. my breakdown is centers=less than 0:20, edges=less than 40-50, 3x3= sub20 to sub25, have some tips?

As above, I hated 4x4 before and never practiced it. But after changing how I solved it, to what I think is Yau, I find things to be far more fluent. I haven't really looked at the way other people solve, and I am probably very inefficient, but I solve yellow + white centers, pair up 3 white/yellow edges and place as 3 cross pieces. Then hold the cross on the right hand side with the empty slot at the top, then solve the remaining centers only performing Lw, r and U moves to keep the cross Undamaged. Then solve the last cross piece, insert it, pair the remaining edges and straight into f2l. I'm sure you are already well aware of this, I'm just bored and fancied writing something. Feel free to ignore it.

With Yau, a good breakdown for sub-1 would be something like this:

1. First-2 Centers: 5s
2. Cross edges: 10s
3. Centers + last crossedge: 10s
4. Edge pairing: 10s (I recommend 3-2-3)
5. 3x3: 25 (this is assuming you get double parity =P)

Obviously this can fluctuate depending on the user (especially between 2 and 3), but this should give you a general idea.

For sub-1:45, just practice, I was at that speed, and I did an average of 5 every morning, and I was sub-1:30 in about two week. Just practice, and try not to turn too fast (and use Yau =P)

Edit: this is all coming from somebody who averages like 53, and I finish redux+cross (with Yau) in about 35 seconds.

I'm barely sub-1:45 with 4x4 but I'm gonna say learn the Yau method. It's far superior to straight reduction once you understand pairing the cross edges and the restricted centers.

"Far superior" is probably a stretch. Lookahead and high TPS is definitely a lot easier with Yau, but that doesn't mean that Reduction sucks, it's just that Yau is probably better for humans. anyway, Reduction has lower move count at the very least. =P

???

EDIT: Unless you meant probably, in which case no argument here :p

Feliks uses Yau?

And does Dan place it incorrectly? What about you?

It just seems smoother to place it incorrectly. But it takes additional effort to remember which is the incorrectly placed dedge.
