Is this a +2 ?

I was blindsolving the 3x3x3, when I removed the blindfold the cube needed an M2 move to get to the solved state. Is that a DNF or +2 ?

It's a DNF because middle turns count as two turns. For example, an M would require the use of both the R and L faces.

This is why you do an R2 at the end of the solve if you aren't sure if it's solved or not to get a +2 instead of gambling on either solved or DNF.

Why would you be off by an r2?

If you mean Rw2 and you do a R2 yeah it will be off by M2. But if it's off by a M2 and you do an R2 it will just need a L2 to be solved thus +2.
