two years ago an episode of radio lab (an innovative science show from my local public radio station) turned me on to the idea that you can influence what you dream about. What does this have to do with cubing?

I try and relax before I got to bed and then do several solves and then go to bed. I do this in hopes that I dream about cubing so I can actually get better in my sleep. I have no way of knowing if it actually works, but on nights when I do it I frequently wake up the next day and immediately want to cube.

I am curious if anyone else had similar experiences.

I sleep with my cubes. Lol.
I'll go to sleep with one on my hand, wake up to solve one, solve one before I take a shower, solve one in the shower, when I get out of the shower,
as I'm walking to the bus, while I'm on the bus, While hugging a girl, while talking to people, while playing my sax, while doing math hw, while reading, while eating, while walking home.

When i get home, avg of 50, then cube while doing hw, while eating, and fall asleep cubing.

I don't think I'm obsessed.

Yea if I had the ability to control what it is I dream about overnight, I'd get Megan Fox and Hayden Panettiere together and we'd ourselves a grand ol' time. Dreaming about solving goddamn Rubik's cubes would be second to last on my list.

this isn't exactly what I am talking about. Not dreams that you will remember when you wake up, but the sort of dream where you work out stresses of the day and come up with solutions. You could conceivably make your pattern recognition faster and do the cross and F2L pairs faster as well as spotting oll and pll cases.

also you could probably do that sort of thing during the day.

Oh, I see, well I guess it could help, it depends on your level of logic too. some people can visualize a solve in their heads, while others have a hard time.
One thing I have noticed is that after a bad cubing day, all your improvement is hidden by anger, so it stays in the subconscious, but the next day, it all comes out and you are now better.

It also depends on how much you sleep and all.

I'm too busy with practicing cubing during the day :(

fair enough :)

the idea is if rats go through mazes they encountered the day before in their dreams and simulate mazes that don't exist and you do solves you may be solving cubes that don't exist in your dreams. we're probably all doing this already but maybe there are ways that we can do it more and make it more effective.

Sounds like youre talking about lucid dreaming, or something like it. You know, where you realize you're dreaming in your dream and can then control it, as if, more or less, you were awake.

I've tried to cube in my dreams, it never works out too well. The algs dont work out how they should, the colors of the pieces change, the size of the puzzle changes, and it never feels like it has only 6 sides, either more or less.

So, question is, why the hell would you want to cube in your dreams? There's like a million other things to do that are way more fun (like...uhm...flying) and work out better too.

Oh, yea, one more comment, you know cubing and lucid dreaming are sort of off-culture things (not underground or anything by any means), so it's not brought up very much, but if you do cube enough to dream about it, something not working on the cube (like what i said above) is an excellent dream sign.

Wrong thread. This comment should be in the Speedsolving Megan Fox thread.

I would like to solve Megan Fox slowly.

Yes you can control what you dream about, and yes you could dream about solving cubes. But they would make absolutely no sense. It would just be a concept of a cube, and maybe a distorted visual of one. It's far to complex for your brain to manifest a fully functional cube in your dreams.

I have tried this before actually. Not to get faster but just to see if it was possible, that was back a year or so ago when I was interested in Lucid dreaming.
When Lucid dreaming its normally impossible to do things like tell time on a clock or read a book because the details change constantly. I found the same thing happened while cubing. The sizes of the cube would change as would the sticker placement. It would go from a 3x3 to a 4x4 to a 3x4 to any size really. It certainly wasn't solvable. However I don't know if it is really impossible or if I was just influenced by the stuff I had read about the clocks so I went in already thinking that it was impossible.

Well. I cube before I go to bed every night. (I always have) And when I wake up Im to too groggy to get up, so I keep my Rubiks Cube on my bedstand and run through a few solves when I wake up. And so far, I've been making great progress :)

And I totally laughed at Rewbiknewbie's omment

lol, don't we all...

Wouldn't

Finally my first correction post! Yes!

Never tried it, but lucid dreaming is quite possible. But it's not something that anyone can do automatically. If you keep trying hard enough, it will probably eventually happen. My AP Psych teacher says that it's best to imagine what you want to dream about before before you fall asleep.

Of course, we can always dream about cubing or something, but not remember it. Dreams are tricky little things.

You expressed my exact sentiment earlier in this thread much better than I did, thought I'd comment on that. I think that it's hard to understand the shifting detail thing if you haven't had dream lucidity (maybe slightly different, not lucid dreaming in that you are aware you are dreaming, but lucidity in that you are aware of the shifting detail), and I agree that it would pretty much make cubing in your sleep totally useless.

There is another side to this, though, that could potentially be useful. Many people use lucid dreaming to more or less 'practice' real life situations in their (self-controlled) sleep environments while lucid, and I think that this could potentially help the 'stage fright' of competitions, or possibly other mental walls that may block someone's progress. The physical aspect of cubing is probably going to be pretty pointless to focus on in dreams, but now that I think about it, lucid dreaming and the mental aspect of cubing could be extremely useful.

I can't really recall dreaming about cubing, but sometimes when i'm lying in bed with my eyes closed, I imagine I'm manipulating the pieces of a cube in some way.
If I'm stuck on something, eg.
I'm confused with an algorithm or I want to find a shorter F2L case, I will experiment with the pieces in my mind. It's actually worked quite well, I just need to get the moves in my head and I'll put it to practice the next day.
I have good imagination.
