This was not my post just some random guy on a cubing Facebook group just wondering what you guys think about it.

(I rarely share my thoughts on my Facebook pages, but today I will and this post will NOT be deleted, whatever happens)
The problem about YiHeng is his mother.
YiHeng Wang - the young rising superstar in Cubing community worldwide. 8 years old, but he need less than 10 seconds to solve the Rubik's cube, the thing that might take average person forever to solve.
I got my first Rubik's cube when I was 4, and I was immediately charmed by it. The magical way everything is solved, the colorful pieces, fast and quick turning. Everything makes the Rubik's cube so charming and become my hobby since then.
When I got to primary school, I didn't play any video games. At that time, many of my friends play League of Legends, Dota, sth... But I didn't. It was all because of the Rubik's cube. To me, it's my soul at that time.
Then, my mom suddenly disrupted it. She took away all of my cubes, and as a secondary student, I have no money. So, I have to stay away from the Rubik's cube in 2 years. It's like you've lost your soul, but you can't do anything. At that time, she implanted a thought into my mind:"This thing is very annoying to other people, just never pick it up again once more."
Not until when I got to secondary did I pick up the Rubik's Cube once again. Now I'm 15, I make a small amount of money every month, but enough to buy 1-2 cube for me. I have my own freedom and most important, I've been more mature, comparing to 10 years ago. I cube for fun, for relaxing and I will never think that someone could abuse her/his child just to force him/her cube. Cubing is a hobby, a sport, not something to make money or abuse. But everything change when I went to Hanoi Super Brain Zyo 2023 that day.
YiHeng Wang was there, and of course as a 8 year-old child, his mom was there, too. Many children was here, all of them are about his age. But, YiHeng stays different from them, because they do cubing in happiness and pleasure, while YiHeng was so depressed and very scared.
I heard many parents standing there with their own children said:"Oh my God, I can't even believe this is happening. His mom is so cruel. He got a 2x2 solve unfinished yesterday (commonly known as DNF in cubing) and his mom keep shouting at him for 15 minutes long. This is way to offensive, I can't imagine someone abuse their child just by a Rubik's Cube." I was so shocked. For real, someone shout at their child just because he/she got a DNF in solving a 2x2 rubik's cube???? And then, I witnessed it on my own. After he got the information that he has the 2nd solve on his World Record average of 5 miscrambled, his mom looks really frustrated. She keeps shouting at him, doesn't let anyone take a picture with him, and immediately sat down, just to do r u' again and again for a 8-year-old child solve the cube in depression. She keeps chatting in Weibo while her child is solving, and then when he slapped the timer, she got up to shout into his face. I barely know any Chinese at this time, but from his reaction, I believe this is a complete nightmare to him.
YiHeng is undeniably excellent. He is believed to be the next Feliks Zemdegs. But, it is sad to see his mom abusing his talent so hard that cubing has become a nightmare to him.
Cubing has to be joyful and it's mean to be a hobby, not something for abusing like this. To me, seeing this is a true offense to the cubing community. The child should have has his own freedom, not abusing his talent.

Super hard to hear what Yiheng has to go through.

I hope his mom gains some perspective and treats innocent harmless people better. No one should treat their child like this yo.

Cubing needs to be fun :(

The fact that there are parents like this actually sickens me. I personally find it unacceptable amd something should be done to protect the sanctity of fun competition and play. Speedcubing, while it can be a fiercely competitive space, has no grounds for being a justification for what's basically child abuse.

This just goes to show that while most people here treat cubing as a fun hobby, people like Yiheng and his parents treat it as a very serious endeavor. Chinese parents are often extremely strict compared to Western countries. Most parents would scold their children if they did poorly on a test. Yiheng's parents scold him for doing poorly at a cubing competition. The Chinese school system is extremely competitive and parents often feel they need to push their children as much as possible in order to make them succeed. Given the reports about "cubing schools" in China, I wouldn't be surprised if cubing has become an extracurricular that is beneficial to getting into better schools, etc. Of course, not all Chinese parents are as extreme as what is described here, but given how much of an outlier Yiheng is in terms of cubing skill, it is not that surprising that his mom would also be an outlier in terms of strictness. These types of children may start to pop up more as time progresses and especially when competitions resume in China. Mere hobbyists cannot hope to compete with someone training as hard as Yiheng.

I get the same crap from my parents about schoolwork, but never to that extent. Poor kid, his parents need to understand that he's literally the best in the world right now and that no child should go through that kind of pressure. I agree with @Sion, cubing should be fun, not harmful to someone's mental health. I even think that WCA should step in and talk to his parents.

This is a great point that I think raises a significant ethical and philosophical dilemma within cubing.

"Cubing schools," or as I'd like to call them, "Cuber Farms" are putting out tons of competitive cubers, not with the intent for fun competition and fun spirit, but to basically be relentless world-class cubing machines, basically being groomed into the hobby from a rather young age, frankly from too young of an age.

It's now gotten to a point where we see cases like Mr. Wang, who already has the 3x3 Average WR down to 4.69, but still has his parents seemingly ridiculing him for missing a single solve in 2x2.

I'm all for boy-genius situations, but for crying out loud, talent shouldn't be abused like this. Measures need to be taken to protect youths in cubing, because right now, such protections barely exist.

I think several things we’ve seen coming out of China have been alarming. As for Yiheng’s mum, I think our worst fears are more or less confirmed. Very sad. I’m not intending to undermine yiheng’s achievements, but it isn’t really in the interests of the community to have an ambassador who is being constantly pressured by his mother, as it isn’t a good look on cubing generally

Here's my logistics.

The WCA governs these competitions where he competes, and where his parents get on him. Their competitions, whether directly or indirectly, are causing Yiheng to be under so much parental stress. It isn't the WCA's fault, but I still think that they should step in. I don't want them to turn a blind eye to their top competitor.

This is disappointing to hear, but honestly it's not super surprising (I also doubt he spends 1-2 hours practicing a day, probably more like 5+). There are thousands/millions of parents like his that behave similarly (not for cubing, but activities and school in general). I'm not trying to dismiss this, but I don't think it's a big enough deal for the WCA to step in. But, in general I do agree that it is sad and very disappointing (hopefully when Yiheng is old enough where his parents don't control him, he will still pursue cubing).

In many sports the competitors are under parental stress, does the NBA or MLB step in just bc it's their top competitor?
