World Rubik's Games Championship 2007 (usually called World Championship 2007, abbreviated to WC2007) was a speedcubing World Championship held at the Novotel Budapest Congress in Budapest, Hungary on October 5-7, 2007. It was the third World Championship of the modern speedcubing era and the second after the creation of the WCA.

Yu Nakajima won the 3×3 final with an average time of 12.46 seconds. Andrew Kang finished second (13.05) and Mitsuki Gunji finished third (13.05)

Competition

The tournament marked 25 years since the original 1982 World Championship which had also taken place in Budapest. This time the competition took place in the Novotel Budapest Congress - a large conference hotel in Budapest. It has a grand theatre room where many of the main events were held.

Two new events had been added since WC2005: the Pyraminx, and 3x3x3 Multi-Blind (performed "old-style"). Prior to the tournament there were fears that the sponsors Seven Towns might attempt to restrict cubers to only Rubik's Brand cubes as in 2005. However, after pressure from the WCA, restrictions were lifted in May 2007.[1]

The tournament was conducted over three days: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. However, the competition properly began on Saturday; Friday saw qualification rounds for people who registered late and were not in the top of the WCA ranking. Excluding the qualification rounds, 214 competitors took part in the competition, of which 65 were from Hungary.

The competition on Saturday kicked-off with the first round of the 4x4x4 Cube event. The day concluded with the finals of the Magic, Master Magic, Square-1 and Megaminx events. Sunday began with the first round of the 3x3x3 Blindfolded before proceeding the the finals of all the other events. The 3x3x3 final began at 3:15pm, however the final event of the tournament was the 3x3x3 With Feet final at 3:45pm. This was followed by the winners' ceremonies and the After Party. The winner of the 3x3x3 speedsolve won €5000 with winners of most other events winning €500 to €1000. Similar to 2005 the winners of Megaminx, Pyraminx, Clock, Square 1, and Magic events only won trophies.[2]

Media and reports

Cheating scandal

Hungarian teenager Mátyás Kuti had won five events at the championship including the 3x3x3 blindfold, 4x4x4 blindfold, and the 3x3x3 multi-blind events (Original results). However the following year the WCA announced "proof beyond any doubt" that he had cheated in the blindfolded events. He was stripped of all of his blindfolded results and suspended him for 3 years.
