Skewb notation

From Speedsolving.com Wiki

The deep-cut nature of the Skewb makes notation difficult, as any single turn alters four corners and three centers - half of the cube.

Cube Rotations

Due to the skewb's cubic nature, NxNxN Notation for cube rotation is sufficient.

Fixed Corner Notation

This notation is used in WCA scrambling. One corner is always held facing the scrambler, and does not move during the scrambling. For official scrambling, this corner is white on top and green on the bottom left. The four corners that can be turned without moving the front corner are the four layers that are turned. As described by the WCA regulations:

12h) Notation for Skewb:
12h1) The puzzle is oriented with three faces fully visible, where the upper face is on top.
12h2) Clockwise, 120 degrees: R (the layer around the farthest visible bottom-right vertex), U (the layer around the farthest visible upper vertex), L (the layer around the farthest visible bottom-left vertex), B (the layer around the farthest non-visible back vertex).
12h3) Counter-clockwise, 120 degrees: R' (the layer around the farthest visible bottom-right vertex), U' (the layer around the farthest visible upper vertex), L' (the layer around the farthest visible bottom-left vertex), B' (the layer around the farthest non-visible back vertex).

Other Notations

Many other notations have been proposed, which are difficult to describe for the writer. Please see #External Links for more.

  • Fixed Center Notation
    • A popular alternative notation
  • Sarah's Notation
    • Used in the popular Sarah's Method, mostly for Sledgehammer and its inverse, Hedgeslammer.
