At this point in time the virtual structure of the cube needs to be discussed. Virtually speaking, the cube has a "base" who's default color is black. It is the base which one is seeing in the gaps between the facelets.

There is a special setting...letter "m" which one can use to color a facelet, using it is considered "masking" a facelet. Its default color is a grey. It can be substituted for any color in any of the parameters. There are a couple of parameters which make a distincting between which facelets are colored and which are masked.
