The SS method (short for Stern-Sun) is a 2x2 method invented by Mitchell Stern and Timothy Sun in 2008. The SS method has three steps. First you solve 3/4 of a face, then you finish the face while orienting the opposite face, and finally you permute both layers at once. Without counting reflections, there are 60 algorithms, including the 5 PBLs.
Trivia
"Stern" is the German word for star, making SS the "Star-Sun" method.
