The World Cube Association (abbreviated as WCA) is the ruling and organizing entity for speedsolving Rubik's Cube and other puzzles. Although the organization does not yet have legal status, all of the top speedcubers regard the WCA as the official organization when it comes to keeping track of cubing records and competitions.

History

The WCA was founded by Ron van Bruchem and Tyson Mao, who started off as the two board members. Gilles Roux joined in October 2004 and Masayuki Akimoto joined the board in September 2005. Gilles Roux retired from the board in Nowember 1 2008.

Requirements for an Official Competition

The following is taken from the official WCA regulations. The following things are necessary for an official competition:

  • The WCA Board must approve the competition.
  • The WCA regulations must be followed.
  • There must be a WCA delegate (appointed by WCA Board) attending the competition.
  • The competition must be clearly announced, and should be announced at least a month before the competition starts.
  • The competition must have at least 12 competitors.
  • The competition must be accessible for the public.
  • The Stackmat timer (at least Generation 2) must be used for time measurement.

Note that if a competition is recognized by the WCA all times achieved during official events there will be regarded official, and that that is the only way to get official times. Because of this, competitions that are not WCA-official tend to get much less interest, because it is impossible to set official records by attending them.

Website

The WCA also maintains a website with records and competition information:
