Panagiotis Verdes
Panagiotis Verdes (or Panayotis Verdes, Greek: Παναγιώτης Βερδές), born 1945, is the Greek inventor of the V-Cube mechanism for V2 through V11.
Verdes is a construction engineer, who comes from the village of Chiliomodi, Corinthia, Greece. From the 1970s to 2003 he worked primarily in road and building constructions, before taking retirement.
In the 1980s he began designing large sized cubes, initially basing his ideas on the cylindrical surfaces used in Rubik's mechanism. He eventually hit upon the idea of using right angle conical surfaces whose axis of rotation would coincide with the semi axes of the cube. All this took place around 1985. His drawings ended up in a drawer until 2002, when he discovered that noone had yet produced a cube larger than 5x5x5. He submitted his drawings to the Greek patent office in May 2003, and applied for worldwide protection in 2004. Verdes' patent allows for cubes of up to size 11x11x11 since he felt that larger cubes would have unreasonable geometrical constraints.
