Online contests are unofficial contests held by online result submissions from the competitors. They have traditionally been called 'contests' rather than 'competitions.'

In the years before the formation of the WCA in 2004 and through around 2006, these online contests attracted many of the world's top cubers at the time and played an important role in pushing maintaining the competitive level within the speedcubing community. With the introduction of official competitions, they became somewhat less important, but they have continued and still often attract some of the best cubers, especially in the events that take more time.
