A cubie is a sub cube.

A twistable cube is built of a number of cubies. The 2x2x2 cube has got 2*2*2=8 cubies, all corner cubies. A 3x3x3 cube has got 3*3*3-1 = 26 cubies, the one in the centre does not count, only the parts that are visible on the surface of the puzzle are cubies, the intrenal parts are something diffrent, like the core of the 3x3x3. Like the 2x2 the 3x3 has eight corners (all sizes of nxnxnx cubes have exactly eight corners), twelve edge cubies and six centre cubies.
