Speedsolving.com Wiki:Manual of Style

From Speedsolving.com Wiki

Many elements of this article are derived from Wikipedia:Manual of Style.

SpeedSolving.com Wiki's Manual of Style should usually somewhat follow Wikipedia's Manual of Style.

Only the "Dates", "Language", and "Titles of books, TV shows, movies, etc." sections are more important. Most others are simply recommendations.

If a rule prevents you from improving or maintaining SpeedSolving.com Wiki, ignore it.

Dates

  • Date should always be in DD/MM/YYYY format (e.g. 21 December 2016).
    • Note that months should not be represented in numbers, but by their full name (e.g. 21 December 2016, not 21/12/2016).
    • Note that years should not be shortened or numbered unless within the body of the article (e.g. 21 December 2016, not 21 December 16, 21 Dec 2016, or 21 Dec 16).
  • Only in the body of the article should month names be shortened (e.g. 21 Dec 2016, not 21 December 2016).

Language

  • Use Proper English and British punctuation (e.g. Her name was "Bessy". rather than Her name was "Bessy."). Note that this does not necessarily imply that SpeedSolving.com Wiki should be fully written in any uniform English dialect such as British English, but that SpeedSolving.com Wiki should be fully written with British punctuation.
  • The dialect of English within an article should stay consistent. E.g. using only American English throughout an article is acceptable, but using both American English and British English within the same article is not acceptable.
    • Note this does not imply the dialect of English should be consistent between all SpeedSolving.com Wiki pages, but that there should only be one specific dialect within each page.
  • Universal terms should be used as much as possible unless it is part of a title, quote, etc. E.g. glasses, not spectacles (British English) or eyeglasses (American English); ten million, not one crore (Indian English).
  • Articles whose titles are in a language other than English should usually redirect to their English translation.
    • If the English translation is not widely used or doesn't "sound right" in English, it is not required to be redirected.
    • All content within the article should be in English.

Article Titles and Section Headers

  • Titles of articles and headers of sections should be written as they would in a normal English sentence, with the initial character capitalized (e.g. CFOP method, not CFOP Method; List of current title holders, not List of Current Title Holders).
  • Titles of articles and headers of sections should not start with "A", "An", or "The" (e.g. World Cube Association Regulations, not The World Cube Association Regulations; World Rubik's Cube Championship 2015, not The World Rubik's Cube Championship 2015).
  • The final characters of titles of articles and headers of sections should not be a punctuation mark unless it is part of the name or is a period for an abbreviation.
  • Quotation marks or apostrophes in titles of articles and headers of sections should be “curly”, not "straight".
    • Redirects should be made of the titles with straight quotation marks or apostrophes to the titles with curly quotation marks or apostrophes.
  • Section headings should not be redundant (e.g. Naming dispute, not The Ortega method's naming dispute, The method's naming dispute, or Its naming dispute).
  • Section headings should not contain any links, including links to other pages on the SpeedSolving.com Wiki and links to websites. (e.g. === World records ===, not === World records ===)
  • Section headings should not be questions (e.g. Steps, not What are the steps?).
    • Exceptions may include Where are they now? or similar, or if the question is a well-known quote or the name/title of something. E.g. if a book were titled How do I Solve the Cube? and the book is significant to the article, or if a famous quote said by the person the article concerns were "Where is it?" and the quote is significant to the article.

Organization

  • Articles should begin with an introductory lead
  • The first instance of the article title in the article should be bolded
  • Articles should not start with section headings
  • Most articles should end with a "References" section, a "See also" section, and an "External links" section
    • The "References" section should usually be last
    • The "External links" section should usually be just before the "References" section.
    • The "See also" section should usually be just before the "External links" section
    • If one of any of those three sections are not applicable to the article, that/those section(s) may be omitted

Titles of books, TV shows, movies, etc.

  • Titles of books, movies, television shows, and other published works should be italicized. E.g. The New York Times , not The New York Times; Cracking the Cube , not Cracking the Cube.
  • Titles of articles, chapters, etc. should be enclosed in quotation marks. E.g. "In District Known for Failure, Will the State Finally Step In?"

References

  • References should be in MLA format.
