This page will be used to organize efforts to improve the Speedsolving.com Wiki. A centralized discussion page for major changes belong here. Since there aren't many active editors, concentrating the discussion here will probably be better than on individual Talk pages. If we ever run into the happy problem of having too large a discussion page, separate pages can be created for individual projects. Please sign your comments (four tildes (~) without space).<br />

=== Creation of a Help link ===<br />
I'm very new here and noticed that you don't have a Help link. (Or at least I can't find it)<br><br />
I'm a Wikipedia editor and so I'm assuming you're effectively using the help files of Wikipedia.<br><br />
May I suggest that you create a help link in the left hand column and then on the help page effectively say as much and maybe link to the main help search page at Wikipedia. Or maybe you're using the help pages provided by the creators of this Wiki software.<br><br />
The thing is that I've just created a GIF for the commutator page and discovered that you don't get a working GIF if you use the Thumb setting to display it. I believe this is unique to this wiki software and I would have liked to have made a note of that so that the next guy could learn from my troubles.<br><br />
There was also something else about creating names for image files.<br><br />
I would be happy to create the Help page if someone would create the Help link. That being said, I might be the wrong guy for the job, but I could get it started.--[[User:Dave3457|Dave3457]] ([[User talk:Dave3457|talk]]) 15:46, 28 November 2012 (EST)<br />
::Hi Dave, The reason we don't have a help link is because the scale of this wiki is quite small. All of the edits are either mostly simple things, like changing the WR pages, or updating something about a person, and most of the page creation is done by someone who has been on here for a while. A help page would only really benefit the few of us who do regular edits and new pages, and so the Wikipedia ones are used since there are no changes that make major differences. As for the GIF Thumb problem, is this also a problem on Wikipedia? If not, you might want to send a message to pjk on the forums about it, he's the site owner, and deals with some of the problems with the Wiki sometimes. Finally, on the subject of names, as long as it is descriptive, and not too long or short, it should be fine. Again, since this is a small wiki, we're unlikely to get conflicts on image names. [[User:MaeLSTRoM|MaeLSTRoM]] ([[User talk:MaeLSTRoM|talk]]) 03:25, 29 November 2012 (EST)<br />
::: Well if you are using the Wikipedia help pages, why aren't you pointing that out? By "I would create the help page" I meant that I would point it out. I'm sure there are users that might be willing to make small changes and such, and maybe large ones, but as things stand right now, unless they have edited Wikipedia they wouldn't know where to start. And they wouldn't necessarily know that they could just use Wikipedia's help pages.<br />
::: I checked, Wikipedia doesn't have the GIF Thumb problem. I told pjk about it on his talk page.<br />
::: Regarding image names, it didn't take the character ' which is probably not specific to this wiki, however since we use that character alot, I thought I would have mentioned it.<br />
::: Actually, I just thought of something, I will link to this discussion from his talk page. Maybe I can talk '''Him''' into it :) -- [[User:Dave3457|Dave3457]] ([[User talk:Dave3457|talk]]) 17:42, 29 November 2012 (EST)<br />

== Naming convention ==<br />
Following Wikipedia, do not capitalize common nouns unless it is the first word. Some articles still have not been renamed; in this case, links to the original article should also be modified and the original article deleted. Redirects shouldn't be used to correct linking to a wrong title.<br />
<br />
== Categorization ==<br />
Kenneth set up a nice [[:Category:Resources]] (retitled from Cubing Resources) a while back, but I'm trying to set up parallel categorization systems that are closer to Wikipedia's; see e.g. [[:Category:Contents]], [[:Category:Cubers]], further classifications therein, and going up to [[:Category:Main topic classifications]]. [[User:Macky|Macky]] 23:30, 18 May 2012 (EDT)<br />
<br />
=== Wikipedia's organization system ===<br />
This is the parallel organization structure I'm trying to set up. For more info see [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Categorization this] and links therein. [[User:Macky|Macky]] ([[User talk:Macky|talk]]) 02:15, 24 May 2012 (EDT)<br />
<br />
One reason for adopting Wikipedia's organization system:<br />
* Visitors are likely to be best used to it.<br />
* Logical and accurate. This leads to better organization in the long run and will also help us see which articles are still needed.<br />
<br />
e.g. Currently [[:Category:Algorithms]] contains articles for substeps that contain algorithms. On Wikipedia, such a category would contain instead articles on the algorithms themselves (e.g. Sune). This category should be created, and the current category should be renamed to [[:Category:Pages containing algorithms]], itself put eventually in [[:Category:Articles]]. It's undeniable that such a category is very useful, but the proper way to give it prominent place would be to put it in [[:Category:Resources]] and feature it on the top page or some other portal pages.[[User:Macky|Macky]] ([[User talk:Macky|talk]]) 02:44, 24 May 2012 (EDT)<br />

<br />
== Terminology ==<br />
[[:Category:Terminology]]. Everything is terminology. I filed terms in subcategories when possible so that this parent category doesn't get out of hand. [[User:Macky|Macky]] ([[User talk:Macky|talk]]) 02:50, 24 May 2012 (EDT)<br />
<br />
== Proposed categories ==<br />
* "Category:WCA events" (not the same as puzzles). Maybe there should be a parent-category to include non-WCA events as well, but [[:Category:Events]] already exists (currently only contains competitions, but there are other uses). [[:Category:Solving Variants]] should be renamed, maybe to reflect this. [[User:Macky|Macky]] ([[User talk:Macky|talk]]) 02:21, 24 May 2012 (EDT)<br />
<br />
== Algorithm pages ==<br />
I have been thinking that we should transfer the alg database, and also tidy up the C*LL pages by making pages for seperate sub-sets of algs. These would look and function much the same as the current PLL / OLL pages, but would be for other alg sets such as ZBLL, OLLCP, 1LLL, WV etc. Maybe split some of the larger sets into seperate pages (ZBLL into seperate corner orientation cases maybe), just because currently for C*LL algs, there are about 3 different pages with algorithms on, and they aren't very organised. Maybe also change the alg template slightly to help with this, so that the set that alg belongs to is more clear (e.g. sune can be used for COLL, CMLL, CLL etc, whereas FRUR'U'F' is not useable for COLL). <br />
== Product Links ==<br />
So on some of the cube pages (example: [[Dayan]]) There are links to buy the cube on lightake, is this still the site that we want to be reccomending to people, or would changing it to the SS shop, or maybe even no shop at all be better? [[Category:Speedsolving.com Wiki administration]]<br />
<br />
I've noticed this, and on most pages that have these links, they are very outdated. I would recommend removing these sorts of links and instead having a page or a category listing shops that sell puzzles to guide people who are looking to buy a product. :Okay I've conducted a basic clean-up of the pages in [[:Category:Puzzle Manufacturers]] - I got rid of all those dead lightake links. And I also rewrote various bits of stuff into the past tense, so that the wiki is no longer declaring the DaYan GuHong or whatever as the greatest cube ever. == Use of SVG image files ==<br />
<br />
I don't think this is a forum question...<br />
<br />
I noticed we can't use vector graphics images. Does mediawiki not have the capability or is it too much load on the server or something else? --[[User:Dave3457|Dave3457]] ([[User talk:Dave3457|talk]]) 16:49, 2 December 2012 (EST)<br />
<br />
:Mediawiki should support them, because WP does. It's probably just this version or something. The real question is, do we need to have svg files? I think that for pretty much every case, a raster image would be acceptable. From what I can tell, the large amount of them on WP is to move towards a more flexible image format, but for this small-scale wiki, we don't particularly need them, at least, that's my opinion. [[User:MaeLSTRoM|MaeLSTRoM]] ([[User talk:MaeLSTRoM|talk]]) 18:12, 2 December 2012 (EST)<br />
:: Personally I work almost exclusively with svg images. I find it a very powerful way to create graphics. Particularly 3D or Axonometric projections. I created the animation and first several images in the WP circular polarization article using the vector graphics software Inkscape. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circular_polarization .<br><br />
:: Tonight I've been working on a Rubik's cube that I plan to use on the commutator page. (Not Axonometric but 3D perspectivie). Its not the end of the world if PJK can't swing it but it would make things more straight forward. I would likely load a svg version on MediaCommons and then a raster version on this site. If I understand things right, the reason they want them on WP is because there is no loss of image quality when you pick a given resolution.<br />
:: By the way...just came across [http://cube.crider.co.uk/visualcube.php VisualCube], which people seem to be using to create their cube images, will be sure to add it to the help files. -- [[User:Dave3457|Dave3457]] ([[User talk:Dave3457|talk]]) 08:16, 3 December 2012 (EST)<br />
::: Will an upgrade solve this or is there a setting I can change to allow svg? I don't recall changing anything to disallow them, and it shouldn't be too much load on the server. I can always upgrade the server if absolutely needed. --[[User:PJK|PJK]] ([[User talk:PJK|talk]]) 08:22, 3 December 2012 (EST)<br />
:::: Oh no, I wouldn't go to the trouble of upgrading the server. I'm not sure how much you know about svg, but after anyone creates an svg they could just create and place a very high raster version on this website and use the thumb feature to scale it appropriately. And if they came across a svg on wikimedia commons they could just put the [http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Circular.Polarization.Circularly.Polarized.Light_Without.Components_Left.Handed.svg 2000px high res version that is provided] on to this site. (Or link directly to it...maybe)<br />
:::: I searched the mediawiki site and came across [http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Image_administration#SVG this]. It looks like you would have to download some supplementary software.<br />
:::: By the way, just by chance, I came across this quote which was [http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Image_administration#GIF directly above it] >>For thumbnailing GIF-Animations under windows, you need to install ImageMagick as described above.<< So you won't need to update things. And ImageMagick will do the svg conversion as well. Sweet! (I think) -- [[User:Dave3457|Dave3457]] ([[User talk:Dave3457|talk]]) 09:55, 3 December 2012 (EST)<br />

Currently all articles using <nowiki>{{Infobox}}</nowiki> have a default "<nowiki>{{{NAME}}} in {{{IMAGEYEAR}}}</nowiki>", regardless of whether or not IMAGEYEAR exists. When IMAGEYEAR doesn't exist, it just leaves a blank "<nowiki>{{{NAME}}} in </nowiki>". Using <nowiki>{{#if:}}</nowiki> (part of ParserFunctions), you can make the "<nowiki>{{{NAME}}} in {{{IMAGEYEAR}}}</nowiki>" not show when there is no IMAGEYEAR added. This would help clean up a lot of articles. [[User:Randomno|Randomno]] <nowiki>[</nowiki>[[User talk:Randomno|talk]]<nowiki>]</nowiki> 12:01, 5 January 2015 (UTC)<br />
:Honestly the other more reasonable option would be to put "????" or "Unknown" if we really don't know the year of the image, although usually the year can be derived from the attached metadata of the image, so this seems like an unnecessary complication for something that is only an issue in the minority of cases. [[User:MaeLSTRoM|MaeLSTRoM]] ([[User talk:MaeLSTRoM|talk]]) 12:13, 5 January 2015 (UTC)<br />

=== Creation of a Help link ===<br />

== Naming convention ==<br />
Following Wikipedia, do not capitalize common nouns unless it is the first word. Some articles still have not been renamed; in this case, links to the original article should also be modified and the original article deleted. Redirects shouldn't be used to correct linking to a wrong title.<br />
<br />
== Categorization ==<br />
<br />
=== Wikipedia's organization system ===<br />
<br />
One reason for adopting Wikipedia's organization system:<br />
* Visitors are likely to be best used to it.<br />
* Logical and accurate. This leads to better organization in the long run and will also help us see which articles are still needed.<br />
<br />

<br />
== Terminology ==<br />
<br />
== Proposed categories ==<br />
<br />
== Algorithm pages ==<br />
== Product Links ==<br />
So on some of the cube pages (example: [[Dayan]]) There are links to buy the cube on lightake, is this still the site that we want to be reccomending to people, or would changing it to the SS shop, or maybe even no shop at all be better? <br />
I've noticed this, and on most pages that have these links, they are very outdated. I would recommend removing these sorts of links and instead having a page or a category listing shops that sell puzzles to guide people who are looking to buy a product. == Use of SVG image files ==<br />
<br />
I don't think this is a forum question...<br />
<br />
I noticed we can't use vector graphics images. Does mediawiki not have the capability or is it too much load on the server or something else? --[[User:Dave3457|Dave3457]] ([[User talk:Dave3457|talk]]) 16:49, 2 December 2012 (EST)<br />
<br />

== Requesting installation of [https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:ParserFunctions ParserFunctions] ==<br />
<br />
::<nowiki>{{#if:}}</nowiki> can still be an extremely useful tool when creating infoboxes. It doesn't really complicate things, since the only difference is a small change to the template. <br />
I've just created a GIF for the commutator page and discovered that you don't get a working GIF if you use the Thumb setting to display it. I've double checked and Wikipedia doesn't have this issue. I've personally overcome the problem by changing the resolution of the GIF but of course this is more of a stop gap measure. Below is my GIF using the thumb feature. I suspect this is more an issue for those creating the Wiki software to deal with, but I don't know. Thanks for your time. == Use of SVG image files ==<br />
<br />
I don't think this is a forum question...<br />
<br />
I noticed we can't use vector graphics images. Does mediawiki not have the capability or is it too much load on the server or something else? --[[User:Dave3457|Dave3457]] ([[User talk:Dave3457|talk]]) 16:49, 2 December 2012 (EST)<br />
<br />

:Mediawiki should support them, because WP does. It's probably just this version or something. The real question is, do we need to have svg files? I think that for pretty much every case, a raster image would be acceptable. I've just created a GIF for the commutator page and discovered that you don't get a working GIF if you use the Thumb setting to display it. I've double checked and Wikipedia doesn't have this issue.

== Use of SVG image files ==<br />
<br />
I don't think this is a forum question...<br />
<br />
I noticed we can't use vector graphics images. Does mediawiki not have the capability or is it too much load on the server or something else? --[[User:Dave3457|Dave3457]] ([[User talk:Dave3457|talk]]) 16:49, 2 December 2012 (EST)<br />
<br />

This wiki has been developing nicely over the years now and is a great resource of information for the cubing community. --[[User:PJK|PJK]] ([[User talk:PJK|talk]]) 04:50, 30 November 2012 (EST)<br />
:::: I agree about this being a great resource, I really believe in these kind of community efforts. "Many hands make lite work."<br />
:::: [http://en.wikipedia.org Here] is the home page of WP and the help link is on the left.<br />
:::: Give me a GO and I will begin creating the help page. It won't be much, just a series of links to the main help pages of WP and a collection of useful things to know regarding things that are specific to this Wiki. -- [[User:Dave3457|Dave3457]] ([[User talk:Dave3457|talk]]) 19:21, 30 November 2012 (EST) .....(Note the other comment in other thread. (I missed yours last time.))<br />
::::: Go for it. Will it be http://speedsolving.com/wiki/Help:Contents? I will get the link on the left once you get it built and we can edit it a bit. Cheers --[[User:PJK|PJK]] ([[User talk:PJK|talk]]) 23:20, 30 November 2012 (EST)<br />
:::::: Good stuff, I'll put it there. -- [[User:Dave3457|Dave3457]] ([[User talk:Dave3457|talk]]) 13:27, 1 December 2012 (EST)<br />
::::::: Err, wouldn't the link be http://speedsolving.com/wiki/index.php/Help:Contents? Seems to be a walkthrough for a unknown random method atm, so it can be cleared. [[User:MaeLSTRoM|MaeLSTRoM]] ([[User talk:MaeLSTRoM|talk]]) 13:43, 1 December 2012 (EST)<br />
:::::::: I don't really now the difference myself, I just came here to say that I don't know how to put one at '''/wiki/Help:Contents''' and that I will be putting it at '''/wiki/index.php/Help:Contents''' instead, for now. That being said. WP uses /wiki/Help:Contents. <br />
:::::::: BTW someone seems to have accidentally created the '''/index.php/''' page already. Nothing links to it right now. -- [[User:Dave3457|Dave3457]] ([[User talk:Dave3457|talk]]) 14:16, 1 December 2012 (EST)<br />
<br />
::::::::: Go ahead and remove that and edit it, since it is a useless page.--[[User:PJK|PJK]] ([[User talk:PJK|talk]]) 20:45, 1 December 2012 (EST)<br />

== Use of SVG image files ==<br />
<br />
I don't think this is a forum question...<br />
<br />
I noticed we can't use vector graphics images. Does mediawiki not have the capability or is it too much load on the server or something else? --[[User:Dave3457|Dave3457]] ([[User talk:Dave3457|talk]]) 16:49, 2 December 2012 (EST)<br />
<br />

== Requesting installation of [https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:ParserFunctions ParserFunctions] ==<br />
<br />
::<nowiki>{{#if:}}</nowiki> can still be an extremely useful tool when creating infoboxes. It doesn't really complicate things, since the only difference is a small change to the template.
