Robert Pergl was a Czechoslovakian speedcuber. He won the second Czechoslovakian Rubik's Cube Championship in 1983, and was one of the fastest cubers of the 1980s.

Czechoslovakia was unusual in holding a second national Rubik's Cube Championship in the 1980s (the USA also held a second one). The second Czechoslovakian Rubik's Cube Championship took place in March 1983. Jiri (Jessica) Fridrich had won the championship the year before, but this time it was won by fourteen-year-old Robert Pergl, with a best time of 17.04 seconds.(note) This was the fastest time recorded in any competition in the 1980s, however it is not recognised by the WCA as an official record.

He used a similar layer-by-layer or CFOP method to Fridrich, but whereas Fridrich was actively using "about 120-150" algorithms, Pergl was using around 600. Pergl stated that his personal best single solve was 11 seconds, and his average-of-ten was 16.7 seconds.

Pergl studied law and works as a lawyer.

Footnotes
*<span id="cite_note-1">Note: Some internet sources list his time as 17.02 instead of 17.04 seconds. A reliable source for his time is currently lacking.</span>
Ronald Brinkmann (sometimes mispelled as Roland Brinkmann(note)) was a German speedcuber. In 1982 he won the West German Cubing Championship, and finished fourteenth in the 1982 World Championship.

Brinkmann came from Harburg, Hamburg, West Germany. At the age of 16 he first solved a Rubik's Cube which belonged to his maths teacher: the teacher had given-up, but Brinkmann solved it overnight. On 6-13 March 1981 a Guinness Book of Records speedcubing tournament took place at the Olympia Shopping Centre, Munich. Brinkmann was joint winner (with Jury Fröschl) with a best time of 38 seconds. He also achieved 29 seconds on German TV and before the end of 1981 reached 24 seconds.

He won the first West Germany Championship in 1982 with a winning time of 19 seconds. This has sometimes been reported as a world record time. If so, it was broken by March 1983, when Robert Pergl won the 2nd Czechoslovakian Championship with a best time of 17.04 seconds.

The World Rubik's Cube Championship 1982 took place on June 5. Brinkmann was, according to Guus Razoux Schultz, the favourite to win. However, the tournament used stiff cubes which favoured those using more efficient methods. Brinkmann ultimately finished in 14th place with a best time of 30.59 seconds. According to David Singmaster, Brinkmann used two methods: one was a Corners first technique (DC, UC, U & D E, ME); the other was DC, 3DE, 4UC, rest.

Footnotes
*<span id="cite_note-1">His name Ronald is verified by the testimony of David Singmaster; Georges Helm (who owns Brinkmann's solution guide); and the 1983 Guinness Book of Records. The WCA, as of 2025, continues to list his name as Roland.</span>
