LSE, also called L6E, short for Last Six Edges, is a possible last step in 3x3 speedsolving that solves the M-slice centers and edges (UF, UB, DF, DB) together with UL and UR edges. It is the last step of the Roux Method and the Ortega Method.

Possible approaches
LSE can be solved in various ways; Gilles Roux himself, the inventer of the Roux Method, advocates a flexible/semi-intuitive approach to LSE without a strict division into substeps. The optimal approach is likely a combination of the approaches below.

Layers-based approach
* 1. centers, BD, and FD
* 2. ELL
This layer-based approach seems out of place in any method ending with LSE.

Original Roux
* 1. Orient centers and edges
* 2. Permute UR and UL edges
* 3. Permute the M slice

The following two approaches are commonly used in Corners first methods.

Corners First approach 1
* 1. Solve UL or UR
* 2. Insert UL/UR while orienting the M slice
* 3. Permute the M slice

Corners First approach 2
* 1. Solve both UL and UR
* 2. Orient and permute the M slice

Reduction to L5E has been proposed as an experimental approach.

L5E
* 1. Centers and BD
* 2. L5E

L5E, Last five edges, is an experimental method that solves five edges, the four in U and one in the D layer, preserving all other pieces.

ELL is a sub group of L5E, all ELL's may be solved in two steps using this method.

Description
There are two main sub-parts. First the edges are oriented using M'UM like in Roux; there are 5 cases for this, and the worst case in Roux (6 edges) is impossible. Then the edges must be permuted; you can place FD during orientation or right after using [U] M' U2 M (named 'P') and end with EPLL, or just permute all five edges in one step.

L5E can be useful for Corners First if the E-slice, centres and three FL edges are solved after the corners. It is also useful in any method that starts with columns, such as one which does the F2L pairs first and then finishes with CMLL, it is an alternative to the last step of Roux if the centres are placed together with the BD edge at first, also for any LBL style, cross minus one edge at first and then the LL corners have been finished with CLL or CMLL or the same for Fridrich with 2-look OLL, corners first, then L5E orientation, place FD using P if it was not solved and end it all in PLL as usally.

Intermediate system
Intuitive
This style is not completely intuitive, because it is still necessary to know EPLL. First orient all unoriented edges, then place the FD edge to its correct position and finally end the solve in EPLL. The necessary intuitive steps are:

* P = M' U2 M
* O = M' U M
* O' = M' U' M

Using that plus some U turns you can solve any case, even all ELL case. For example, O U P = (M' U M) U (M' U2 M) is a sample algorithm which solves orientation, then places FD. There is a 1 in 12 chance that EPLL is skipped; otherwise there is one algorithm left.

There is another notation which can make it shorter to write algorithms:

* F(moves) = F2 (moves) F2

It is important here that the moves inside the parentheses keep the corners solved, so that they will still be correct after this algorithm. An example is the U-perm, F(U P U) = F2 (U M' U2 M U) F2. F(O U') is a nice way to solve orientation and place FD all at once if the FD edge is in the middle of three unoriented edges in LL.

Using algorithms
The intuitive style lets you find and understand the orientation algorithms yourself. Another approach is to learn the algorithms instead of finding them; the cases are:

colspan="2" | <center>All images show white on top (U) and green in front (F).</center>
More algs are at the L5EOP page

Sometimes this will also solve the FD edge; the images show where the FD edge must be for the algorithm to solve it, but otherwise you should simply treat the yellow sticker as white. If you learn these positions, it can also be useful to learn the mirror algorithm for the case where FD is on the opposite side from the image. The easiest example is to use O' instead of O for the case with three flipped edges on U. Just like the intuitive step, if FD is not solved use P, and either way finish with EPLL.

Semi-advanced system
L5EOP is an alternative to L5E, that always solves the FD edge while orienting ('P'lace). Then the last step will always be EPLL.

FD placement + EPLL (L5EP)
Another possibility for improving the intermediate style is to permutate the last five edges in one step. This only requires 16 algorithms in total, so counting the 5 orientations creates a system that solves L5E in two short steps. Even if you know this, it is still useful to place FD without extra moves if possible, since EPLL recognition is very fast.

We will introduce the following function:
* f(moves) = f2 (moves) [U] f2 ... This is the same as the F() function above, but with double layer f turns. Note that sometimes the adjusting U turns are not mentioned.

Here are the algorithms for permutation of all 5 edges; make sure to use AUF to place the FD edge at the position it has in the image.

Advanced system
The most advanced system would be to simply solve in one step. Nobody has generated the algorithms for this yet, but it may not be a good idea because of the large number of cases and bad recognition. For the worst ones the algorithm will probably just be the same as in the 2-step solution, so the benefit will be small at best.

One case where this is useful (and doable) is to solve cases where at least one of the edges is solved at the start. Using setup turns and ELL this can be done in one step, although the recognition and setup moves might mean that this is not worth doing.

Winter Variation, abbreviated as WV, sometimes referred to as F2LL, is a subset of VLS used for orienting the last layer corners during insertion of the final F2L slot. It is generally used in conjunction with methods in which the last layer edges are already oriented before insertion of the final F2L block, such as ZZ or Petrus.

WV may only be used in last slot cases where the final corner-edge pair are already connected in the U-Layer. In the R U R' case Summer Variation can be applied. After using WV, all the pieces will be correctly oriented in the last layer, and the solver must use PLL algorithms to correctly position them.

There are 27 Winter Variation algorithms total, one for each configuration of corner orientations. WV cases are set up so there is a corner-edge pair in the top layer to be placed in the final slot. Recognition of cases is typically done by looking at 3 of the corners in the top layer (the last corner's orientation is always dependent on the other 3). Since the last slot can potentially be in 1 of 4 positions, the solver must readily be able to recognize mirror cases and apply mirror algorithms in order to use WV.

The benefit to learning WV is that the solver uses fewer moves than directly placing the final c/e pair and using standard OCLL algorithms. The average move count for optimal WV algorithms is 8.07. In addition, PLL algorithms are generally well known, since PLL is the last step of the popular Fridrich method.

Russo is a method proposed by Anthony Russo in 2019. Russo is similar to Roux in the fact it is a blockbuilding method, but not similar in the way it solves BD edge, resulting in the final step only solving the last 5 edges instead of the last six.

Steps
1. Build the First 2 Layers without the FD cross edge.

2. Orient and Permute the Last Layer corners.

3a. Orient the remaining 5 edges. This step is done intuitively.

3b. Solve the last 5 edges is one algorithm.

Pros
*Like the Roux and Petrus methods, it is a blockbuilding method, has a lower move count than the CFOP method.
*CLLs are the fast OLLCPs from CFOP

Cons
*Blockbuilding can be hard for a beginner to understand
*If a M move is left out, it could result in a DNF
*Depending on how blockbuilding is done, and the final step, M-slices are used a lot, which makes it harder for higher layer puzzles and OH solving.
Possible Improvements
* 3/4 cross - Instead of blockbuilding the first 2 layers, solve a 3/4 cross on the bottom layer without the DF edge, then do F2L. This could increase TPS and better lookahead
L5EOP, last five edges orientation and placement of the last first layer edge, is an experimental method for the 3x3x3 cube that is an alternative to L5E. In L5E the last five edges are first oriented without minding the permutation for the last first layer edge (normally the FD edge), then all five are permuted together. That makes 5 algs for L5EO (orientation) and 16 for L5EP (permutation). This method requires 20 algorithms for orientation and FD placement and on top of that you also need the 4 EPLLs that are used to end the solve.

In the cases where the last FL edge is solved by chance before this step (1:10) knowing ELL will help a good bit, aspecially for the 4-flip case.

:- Why L5EOP? Can't I do the same using L5E?
:- Well, L5E is more elegant than this but here we are talking brute force, you will always have EPLL in the end and you know it, wich makes recog almost instant. And besides that, here you get a skip in 12 for the last step, without any force used L5E permutation skips in 1 of 60.
:- If I use both then? some cases are only three turns to orient if you don't put the last FL edge.
:- Yes, and ELL!

Usage of the method
Roux Method; after F2B and CMLL you solve centres and the BD edge and you are here.

Columns First Methods; nearly the same as for Roux but there are two more edges to place (RD/LD) together with the centres after the columns are compleated.

Petrus Method; Build the 2x2x3 block and then you initially skip the "bad edges" step and just do the "finish F2L" part. Because edges are not oriented at this point the pairs will be diffrent, but still easy, (you can benefit from using the empty side). Then, if you do COLL you can use L5EOP after the pairs but better is to use CLL (or even CMLLs like R' U2 R U2 R U2 R U2 R') and do the edges after, it saves turns on average, end in EPLL. For OLL; edges after the pairs, OCLL and last PLL.

LBL, 3 piece cross, F2L as normally, L5EOP, COLL + EPLL or even ZBLL (it becomes an alternative to VHF2L) or for "Fridrich" the same start but any OLL that twist the corners before L5EOP (you can use shorter OLLs if you ignore edges) and last PLL (more or less a 2-look OLL, not an option really, but you can benefit from having a empty side while building the pairs).

Cases
Testing a new image style:

This is the goal position for the five edges involved, UR, UF, UL, UB and FD. The four in U we only orient but the last one (yellow/green) must also be placed. If these images are not perfectly clear to you, then just click one of the algs in the listing for the particular case and you will have a virtual cube showing the case and another click on the play button and it will animate the turns for you.

If you got the last case, the one with all edges correctly oriented, and if the last D edge is still up, you can easily put it by doing AUF and then M' U2 M. Another option is to solve all the rest in one look using the permutations of L5E. The orientation skips 1:16 times. A compleate skip of this step (skip to EPLL) occures 1:80 times (total skip 1:960).

* Arrow - Instead of blockbuilding the first 2 layers, solve an arrow on the bottom layer without the DF edge, then do F2L. This could increase TPS and better lookahead

Algorithms
EOcross is a variant to EOline. In this variant, instead of building an EOline, a EOcross is built, which is the same thing as an EOline, but the cross is solved. This variant will make the move count of ZZ slightly higher, but may allow for more TPS and better lookahead than just an EOline.

3b. Permute the last 5 edges. This step can be done semi-intuitively.

* P = M' U2 M
* O = M' U M
* O' = M' U' M

* F(moves) = F2 (moves) F2
