V-cube is a brand of cube puzzles which started selling cubes in June 2008. For the moment they only sell the 5x5x5, 6x6x6, and 7x7x7 puzzles, but they have plans to go from 2x2x2 all the way through 11x11x11.

V-cubes were invented by Panagiotis Verdes and are produced by Verdes Innovations S.A., Verdes's company located in Greece. The design of these cubes is completely new and different from all pre-existing designs, as it is based on the cone and as the pieces hook together instead of simply being held together by the centers. In addition, the plastic used for the V-cubes is a bit more elastic than the normal plastic for cubes. This leads to several advantages:
* V-cube pieces are much less likely to break than pieces of any other cube, and several people have tested this by drop-kicking the cubes, throwing them across the room or onto concrete, and so on, and then immediately playing with them afterwards. This would destroy a normal cube.
* When one piece of a V-cube pops out, the remaining pieces are still held in place, so the puzzle does not collapse like an Eastsheen 4x4 or 5x5 typically does. Because of this, even if a V-cube is loose enough to pop frequently, it will remain stable until the piece is placed back in, and it is even possible to do turns (such as finishing an algorithm) while the piece is missing.
* V-cubes seem to be significantly smoother than other brands, even out of the box, and their design allows them to cut corners and be fingertricked on without any lubrication or wearing in. This makes them excellent for speedcubing.

It is very important to note that V-cube was also the first company to ever mass-produce the 6x6 and 7x7 puzzles. In fact, only a handful of these higher-order cubes have ever created by anyone else, and none of those designs were stable enough to be mass-produced. Not only are the V-cubes the first to have such large sizes, however, but every size of V-cube can be speedsolved, and the V-cube 5x5 is far better than any other brand on the market. In short, buying a set of V-cubes is very highly recommended for anyone who is interested in solving big cubes.
This is almost certainly the best type of 5x5. The mechanism incorporates new principles which allow it to have low friction but also to remain intact even when several pieces are removed. Although it can take some time to break in, this type of 5x5 to the point where it is very easy to turn, a V-cube 5x5 will easily cut corners without being broken in or lubed at all.

The V-Cube is protected by patent worldwide, which has led to some controversy regarding knock-offs. Even puzzles types that are not available, such as the Maru 4x4x4, are considered in violation of patent, as the mechanism is inspired by V-Cubes.
Store-bought Rubik's cubes are popular among beginning cubers due to their widespread availability. They are generally decent for speedcubing, but the centers are riveted rather than screwed into the core, so tension is not adjustable. According to User:BeastlyFry there is about a 50% chance of getting a good store-bought cube, :so you might have to buy a few of them before you find one that you like. the best thing for this cube it to lube it with a petroleum base product for about a month then clean it and then using a silicone based lube. check out lubrication and cleaning from more information.
Rubik's brand 4x4s (before the retooling) are often used by older cubers, since they can be extremely good but require a long time to properly break in. These cubes can get surprisingly loose before they become unusably pop-prone, because unlike the Eastsheen cubes they do not have internal pops. Rubik's has now re-tooled this cube, and it now has a slightly modified mechanism. People have said that this cube locks up too much and pops too much. This brand is now being used less due to preference towards other brands, such as Eastsheen and Meffert's brands, and more recently MF8/DaYan and QJ.
The Rubik's 5x5 is not a very good speedcube and is known by some as a "Rubik's Brick" due to the extreme amount of force that was once required to make turns on this puzzle out of the box. Although this puzzle has been retooled, and the newer Rubik's 5x5 cubes are much better, they are still not as good as the V-cubes. The outer layers tend to be much harder to twist than the inside layers. This is the largest of the main 5x5 brands.
These cubes are, as the name suggests, available at Rubiks.com. DIY means that the puzzle arrives disassembled and requires you to assemble it yourself. They have been criticized because the center caps do not stay in as well as some other designs, although this can be fixed with either glue or a small square of paper. A better fit can be achieved once some extra plastic is shaved off. Still, unlike store-bought cubes, the center tensions are adjustable, so these cubes are favored by some cubers.
This brand is now being used less due to Eastsheen and Meffert's brands.
Professor's Cube
The Rubik's 5x5 is not a very good speedcube and is known by some as a "Rubik's Brick" due to the extreme amount of force that was once required to make turns on this puzzle out of the box. Although this puzzle has been retooled, and the newer Rubik's 5x5 cubes are much better, they are still not as good as the V-cubes. The outer layers tend to be much harder to twist than the inside layers. This is the largest of the main 5x5 brands.

It is functionally similar to a standard store-bought Rubik's 3x3x3, the main difference being removable caps and adjustable screws, plus it utilizes the Japanese colour scheme (white opposite blue). In addition to the cube, the package includes a plastic stand, two screwdrivers (one flathead for removing the center caps, one Phillips head for adjusting screws), a tube of lubricant, and two instruction booklets (written in Japanese).

Toquinha1977: Expansive description by the owner of one of these bad boys.

The Studio Cube is a 3x3x3 manufactured by Rubik's in Hungary. It shares many similarities with the original cubes manufactured in the 1980s, such as vinyl stickers (unlike the paper stickers laminated with PET, as found on current store bought cubes) and flat centers (as opposed to the arched centers found on most modern cubes). The center caps are also removable to allow access to the adjustable screws, although initial removal may be difficult.

Purchase price is variable, currently about $15.49 plus shipping on eBay (as of 2010), going up to $20 in 2007. The higher than average price can be attributed to the low numbers of cubes produced per year, hand assembly, and labour costs, all in comparison to Asian manufacturers.

Opinions about its suitability for speedsolving vary, although generally it is not a preferred cube, due to the flat centres (more prone to pops), required break-in, and possible modifications required (replacements of springs, screws, and possibly the core).
