The Seaweed Method is a variant of the Columns First Methods. It was mainly created for fun and isn't very efficient. It was inspired by several methods (such as CFOP, Columns First Methods, Reduction 3x3).

The Steps
1. 4 F2L Pairs

You could also do this by solving the four first layer corners and then the four middle layer edges using the LBL alg and its mirror.

2. Centers

This step is very easy to do intuitively, although you could use one of the four algorithms.

3. OCLL

Orient the four LL corners using at least 2-Look OLL. Don't mind the edges that may be flipped, white or both.

4. CPLL

Permute the four LL corners using at least 2-Look PLL.

5. Last Eight Edges

You are now left with eight edges. You have to permute and orient them in any order.

Getting Faster
Using the Seaweed method the way it is described above will solve the cube, but it will be slow and take a long time. There are multiple ways to improve your times with this method:

a. Setup Moves

The best way to improve is to use setup moves for the last step, as you would for Old Pochmann but with these algorithms.

b. More and faster algorithms

Learn all the useful algorithms. Try using algorithms that would solve a case that resembles the one you have for OLL and PLL to set up a better case for the fifth step. Also use some OLL (2x2x2) algorithms for OLL (don't use the ones that swap your F2L pairs though).

c. Practice the first step

Try solving F2L as fast as you can. Also try inserting pairs in the right spot from the beginning to get a very easy case or a skip on the second step. Become color neutral (at least partly). Look-Ahead is also crucial.

d. Pay attention

Try to identify as many F2L pairs as you can during inspection and where they should go. During Look-Ahead, try predicting which center permutation you will have to make. Predict where edges are going during the last step to flip them correctly beofre swapping them in certain cases.
Learning all the algorithms.

Probably the first one you'd think up if you wanted to make a Columns First method. That page says "It is a great mystery why these methods are not popular at all. They are fast, effective and easy but there are few cubers who use columns as their main method." but it's obviously just a worse version of Roux - instead of building the first two blocks in their entirety you build 4 pairs, rotate, insert the edges Roux has already solved, rotate back, then do LSE.
I mostly agree. I haven't seen any page that described exactly this though. It shouldn't go on other pages (for example in the "See also" boxes or anything), I just want it to exist. Now if that's not right please just tell me about it.

The Seaweed Method is a variant of the Columns First Methods. It was mainly created for fun and isn't very efficient. It is inspired by several methods (such as CFOP, Columns First Methods, Reduction 3x3).

The Steps
1. 4 F2L Pairs

You could also do this by solving the 4 first layer corners and then the 4 middle layer edges using the LBL alg and its mirror.

2. Centers

This step is very easy to do intuitively, although you could use one of the four algorithms.

3. OCLL

Orient the four LL corners using at least 2-Look OLL. Don't mind the edges that may be flipped, white of both.

4. CPLL

Permute the four corners using at least 2-Look PLL.

5. Last Eight Edges

You are now left with eight edges. You have to permute and orient them in any order. To do this, use the nine edge swap algorithms and
the four edge flip algorithms

Getting Faster
Using the Seaweed method the way it is described above will solve the cube, but it will be slow and take a long time. There are multiple ways to improve your times with this method:

a. Setup Moves

The best way to improve is to use setup moves for the last step, as you would for Old Pochmann but with these algorithms.

b. More and faster algorithms

d. Pay attention

Try to identify as many F2L pairs as you can during inspection and where they should go. During Look-Ahead, try predicting which center permutation you will have to make. Predict where edges are going during the last step to flip them correctly beofre swapping them in certain cases.

Learning all the algorithms.

Learning all the algorithms.

Look-Ahead is also crucial.

d. Pay a lot of attention

Try to identify as many F2L pairs as you can during inspection and where they should go. During Look-Ahead, try predicting which center permutation you will have to make. Predict where edges are going during the last step to flip them correctly beofre swapping them in certain cases.

The Seaweed Method is an advanced Rubik's cube method invented by oui in 2019. It is quite hard for beginners and takes some practice to be efficient, it was mainly created for fun.

3. OCLL

Orient the four LL corners using 2-Look OLL. Don't mind the edges that may be flipped, white of both.

4. CPLL

Permute the four corners using 2-Look PLL.

Learning all the algorithms.

Look-Ahead is also crucial.

d. Pay a lot of attention

Try to identify as many F2L pairs as you can during inspection and where they should go. During Look-Ahead, try predicting which center permutation you will have to make. Predict where edges are going during the last step to flip them correctly beofre swapping them in certain cases.

This is the most important tip to become faster with Seaweed. For the last step, the idea is to place the edges you want to swap or flip at the right spot using a setup move, do the algorithm, then undo setup move. This is something you use in Old Pochmann for example (check the "See also" box for more information).

- learning all algs
- ortega OLL

- solving f2l in the right spot
- becoming color neutral, at least partly
- paying lot of attention at inspection

- OLL that resembles
- PLL that resembles

- edge flip before swap, predicting flips

- learning all algs
- solving f2l in the right spot
- becoming color neutral, at least partly
- paying lot of attention at inspection

The Seaweed Method is an advanced Rubik's cube method invented by oui in 2019. It is quite hard for beginners and takes some practice to be efficient, it was mainly created for fun.

3. OCLL

Orient the four LL corners using 2-Look OLL. Don't mind the edges that may be flipped, white of both.

4. CPLL

Permute the four corners using 2-Look PLL.

There are multiple ways to improve your times with this method:

a) Setup Moves

This is the most important tip to become faster with Seaweed. For the last step, the idea is to place the edges you want to swap or flip at the right spot using a setup move, do the algorithm, then undo setup move. This is something you use in Old Pochmann for example (check the "See also" box for more information).

b) More and faster algorithms

Learning all the algorithms, which are quite simple, can help you get better times, obviously. Don't use 2-Look OLL and PLL but try using algorithms that would solve a case that resembles the one you have; this way, you will already set up a better case for the last step. Also, for OLL, you could use the Ortega method's algorithms, as the goal is to flip the corners.

- learning all algs
- ortega OLL

- solving f2l in the right spot
- becoming color neutral, at least partly
- paying lot of attention at inspection

- OLL that resembles
- PLL that resembles

- edge flip before swap, predicting flips

The Seaweed Method is an advanced Rubik's cube method invented by oui in 2019. It is quite hard for beginners and takes some practice to be efficient, it was mainly created for fun.

3. OCLL

Orient the four LL corners using 2-Look OLL. Don't mind the edges that may be flipped, white of both.

4. CPLL

Permute the four corners using 2-Look PLL.

There are multiple ways to improve your times with this method:

a) Setup Moves

This is the most important tip to become faster with Seaweed.

- learning all algs
- ortega OLL
- solving f2l in the right spot
- becoming color neutral, at least partly
- paying lot of attention at inspection
- OLL that resembles
- PLL that resembles

- edge flip before swap, predicting flips

Table Structure
This is potentially a fantastic page but i feel it is organised poorly. I would like to propose a new layout that features the following columns.

Method : Puzzle : Type : Characteristics : (Year) Proposer

So for example the entry for Roux would be ...

Roux : 3x3 cube : Block-building : Speedsolving, fewest moves : (2003) Gilles Roux

What do people think?

Cubo

----

I think we need to be careful about making the table unnecessarily wide. Inserting puzzle and purpose in the table will cause a lot of unnecessary repetition, making the table wider, and less likely to be organized well. Headers encourage the information to be placed in blocks of similar methods (eg 3x3 speedsolving).
Perhaps adding the year it was invented would be valuable, but it would be better as a separate column rather than inserted as brackets.
The proposed 'Characteristics' column is too ambiguous (eg, 'looks cool' might be added here) - I would call it 'Purpose', and leave it in the table sub-headers. Methods generally have a main purpose, since they are often designed with a specific need in-mind. They may also be applied in other domains - almost all methods have lessons that can be used in fewest moves. For example block building in Roux is useful for FM, but doing the whole solve using Roux is not really appropriate. Roux's main purpose is speedsolving, so to avoid confusing beginners it should be called a 'speedsolving' method. Clicking on the method page can provide more information to indicate whether it may be used for other secondary purposes, with a bit more context. For example: "Roux is not an FM method, but familiarity with block-building used at the start may help the user in FM solving."

----
Hi there!

I hope I'm responding in the correct way -- I'm just editing my original, or was I meant to create a new section?

Anyway ... you have a lot of good points.

Adding puzzle category WOULD create a lot of repetition, so probably not a good idea.
Year as a separate column also a good idea.
Also agree characteristics could be a tricky one. What about simply adding algs and av moves? This might be a more objective way to convey the same info -- after all, lower alg/higher moves tends to be for beginners, whereas higher algs/lower moves tends to be for speedsolving.
Type column I think could be helpful and can be more objective: LBL, corners first, block building etc although some are hybrids.

Thoughts on that?

----
Please be careful with your edits - you completely wiped out my last response when you replied.

I created a section, because the discussion page needs to be divided into discussion topics. This discussion is about the table structure.

Methods are pretty complex, and trying to put too much information here will lead to inaccuracy and clutter. Only information which is certain and not open to interpretation should be used in the table.

Things like number of algs is easy to count for beginner methods, but not for more advanced methods. Number of moves, again depends on the solver and style. If you make a guess by doing a few solves yourself and place it in the table then you risk upsetting other solvers who may be more efficient.

These kinds of properties of methods should be discussed within the method page, where they may be given some context. For example, for number of moves it is reasonable to measure the number of moves as the sum of average optimal move counts for each step, but this needs to be stated explicitly. Moreover, what constitutes a 'step' may also be a grey area for some methods. For example in ZZ, some consider a whole 1x2x3 block to be a 'step', while others consider only 1x2 and 2x2 blocks.

Again, for a Type column consider that a single method may use multiple techniques. Roux may partially be considered corners first and blockbuilding. It is certainly closer to the corners-first family than ZZ or CFOP. What type would this method have? I believe that if people are encouraged to place methods into specific type buckets, then there will be interpretation and inaccuracy which might lead readers to the wrong conclusions about a method.

The Seaweed Method is an advanced Rubik's cube method invented by oui in 2019. It is quite hard for beginners and takes some practice to be efficient, it was mainly created for fun.

3. OCLL

Orient the four LL corners using 2-Look OLL. Don't mind the edges that may be flipped, white of both.

4. CPLL

Permute the four corners using 2-Look PLL.

5. Last Eight Edges

You are now left with eight edges. You have to permute and orient them in any order. To do this, use the nine edge swap algorithms and
the four edge flip algorithms

Columns first is a group of methods for the 3x3x3 cube that in some way build four columns of three pieces each, two adjacent corners and the and the edge between them, as the first steps. Columns are most often aligned top to bottom but two more directions are possible. It is a great mystery why these methods are not popular at all. They are fast, effective and easy but there are few cubers who use columns as their main method.
Columns for total noobs
* Solve 4 first layer corners.
* Solve 4 middle layer edges using the LBL alg and its mirror.
* Use Sune and Antisune to orient the last layer corners.
* Use A-PLL to permute the corners.
* Solve centres using M and S.
* Use M' U M and M' U2 M to solve the first layer edges.
* Use M' U M U2 M' U M to orient the last layer edges.
* Use U-PLL to permute the LL edges.

This will solve the cube but in at least 100 turns on average, probably more, there are more effective ways and using this will only complicate things, you are better of with a pure CF method. The whole idea is to benefit from solving the middle layer while solving the first layer corners, that's how columns differs from CF. Take a look at this intermediate method instead:

Intermediate columns
* Solve 4 F2L pairs.
* corners (COLL, 42 algs)
* Solve centres together with 2-3 first layer edges.
* Orient the remaining edges (EO, 5 or 9 cases depending on method)
* Permute last edges, one way is to solve the last one(s) to FL and use EPLL, another is to use Roux style and put RU-LU and then permute the M-slice.

Much better, it will solve in less than 60 STM, look ahead is fairly easy, and there are not more than around 20 algorithms, a method well suited for speedsolving.

Not really columns
One way to improve the intermediate method is to skip the CP step, always solve the last FL edge(s) after EO and end the solve using PLL. That will average around 55 STM but you will need nearly twice as many algs then.

Advanced
See PCMS for an example.

Columns for big cubes
Masayuki Akimoto invented a columns first method for 4x4x4 and larger cubes some years ago that once was published at his site (that is down nowdays).

See this thread at Speedsolving.com for more information on that.
