A pretty pattern is an aesthetic state of a puzzle. Some cubers create and share pretty patterns for amusement.

Examples of Simple Pretty Patterns
3x3x3 Cube
M2 E2 S2 - "Pons Asinorum", creates a checkerboard pattern on each face.

M S M' S' - "6-Spot", moves all six center pieces around.

M2 S M2 S' - "4-Spot", moves four of the center pieces around.

(L2 F2 R2 B2)3 - creates a checkerboard on two opposite faces.

U R2 F B R B2 R U2 L B2 R U' D' R2 F R' L B2 U2 F2 - superflip, flips all edges on the cube without affecting anything else.

2x2x2 Cube
Some patterns can be found easily just by doing a combination of 180 degree twists.

R2 F2 R2 U2 - creates a checkerboard pattern on four faces.

F2 R2 U2 F2 - creates a striped pattern on each face.

F2 R2 F2 - creates stripes on four of the faces. (This is also a PBL case.)

F2 R2 U' F' U R' U2 R U' F' - creates a 'cube in a cube' effect.

Other Puzzles
Pretty patterns are possible for every puzzle, but for some puzzles (such as Megaminx) the algorithms to create them would be so long and unwieldy that pattern creators do not even try to create them. In these cases it is necessary to just solve the puzzle into the required pattern, which is in fact one possible way to create any pattern on any puzzle.

The Skewb, Skewb Diamond and Skewb ultimate are all puzzles built on the same central mechanism : a 4-legged core with four of the eight corner pieces attached to it. The only difference between the puzzles is the shape. This means that pieces from any of the skewb variants are compatible and can be interchanged. For example, the 3D Skewb and Polymorphix are made by swapping the corner pieces of a Skewb and a Skewb Ultimate.

Skewb
The Skewb is a cube-shaped puzzle. It consists of 6 centre pieces and 8 corner pieces, four of which are attached to the central core. It is a deep-cut puzzle - ie. each cut goes through the center of the puzzle and half of the puzzle changes when it is turned.

Skewb Ultimate
The skewb Ultimate is the dodecahedral version of the skewb. It is slightly more difficult than the skewb, as the center pieces have more than one colour and threrfore need to be correctly oriented.

Skewb Diamond
The skewb diamond is a octahedral modification of the Skewb. It can be made by truncating each corner of a regular skewb and extending each center into a square-based pyramid. The 'centers' of each face on the diamond would be the corners of the standard skewb.

The skewb, Skewb Diamond and Skewb ultimate are all Puzzles built on the same central mechanism - a 4-legged core with four corner pieces attached. The only difference between the puzzles is the shape. This means that pieces from any skewb variant are compatible and can be interchanged.

The skewb diamond is a octahedral modificatoin of the skewb. It can be made by truncating each corner of a regular skewb and extending each center into a pyramid. The 'centers' of each face on the diamond would be the corners of the standard skewb.

Skewb ultimate
The skewb ultimate is based on the same central mechanism as the skewb, except the cube shape has been expanded into a dodecahedron. This makes the puzzle slightly more difficult, as the center pieces also need to be put in the correct orientation.

Skewb diamond
The skewb diamond also uses the same mechanism as the skewb. This means that the pieces from any of the 3 puzzles can be interchanged. The skewb diamond is a cube that has been modified into an octahedron, by truncating each corner and extending each center into a pyramid.
