David Allen is a American speedcuber from Bradford, Pennsylvania, and in 1982 won the title of US National champion.

The USA was relatively unusual in holding a second national Rubik's Cube Championship in the 1980s. Minh Thai had won the first in 1981 with a best time of 26.04 seconds. The second USA Rubik's Cube Championship ("2nd Rubik Cube-A-Thon") took place in Los Angeles, California on November 5th, 1982. David Allen won the contest and became National Champion with a winning time of 22.48 seconds.

However as winner of the contest he had to go head-to-head with Minh Thai for the title of "Grand Champion". Minh Thai won this challenge and the title with times of 26.23 secs (Round 1) and 25.62 secs (Round 2). The entire competition was broadcast on the "That's Incredible" TV show on January 24, 1983.

David Allen returned to cubing for the World Rubik's Games Championship 2003. He ultimately finished in sixth place with an average time of 21.92 seconds. His best single solve was 16.99 seconds. He also competed in the 3x3x3 One-Handed event (1:19.04).

Jessica Fridrich records that he used a corners-first method. She states that he "had a very unique cubing style filled with incredibly fast finger shortcuts powered by both index fingers ... I have never seen anybody twisting the cube so fast in a competition".
Minh Thai (born Thái Minh) is a Vietnamese-American speedcuber. As a sixteen-year-old student, he won the first World Championship in 1982 in Budapest, Hungary with a best single of 22.95 seconds using a corners first method.

Around 1979 he came to the USA from Vietnam as a refugee, speaking no English. Seven days after buying a Cube in June 1981, he could do it in under two minutes.

The US Championship took place on November 13 1981. Minh Thai, age 16, won with a best time of 26.04 seconds, beating Jeffrey Varasano into second place. The first prize was $2000 plus the trip to the World Championships. The tournament was recorded and broadcast on the TV show "That's Incredible" shown on December 7.

Minh Thai won the first World Rubik's Cube Championship 1982 in Budapest (5 June) with a best time (in round 2) of 22.95 seconds. He also had the best time averaged over all three rounds. David Singmaster reports that he used a Corners First method. His time of 22.95 seconds would become the official world record until the next championship in 2003.

On November 5 1982 a 2nd American Rubik's Cube Championships ("Cube-A-Thon") took place. Contestants competed for the title of "National Champion" and the right to challenge Minh Thai. Minh Thai won the title of "Grand Champion" by beating David Allen. The tournament was broadcast on "That's Incredible" on January 24 1983.

Minh Thai is the author of the following books:

Davidlark: Distinguished between WCA & Singmaster notation

While there have been many other ways to keep notation on Rubik's Cube moves, the most common method is the use of letters to represent sides or layers of the cube. The following is a list of what those letters are and what they represent. Keep in mind that all designated notations are relative to the face of the cube directly in front of you. After a cube rotation, the letters will be relative to that new side. The lowercase letter i or an apostrophe or 'prime' symbol can be used to indicate a counterclockwise rotation of the face by 45 degrees. When the letters are lowercase, that side and a certain middle slice are both moved.

Illustrated Notated Movements

Standard Moves
----
R (right side) = the right face is rotated 90 degrees clockwise (upwards relative to you)
----
L (left side) = the left face is rotated 90 degrees clockwise (downwards relative to you)
----
U (up face) = the top layer is rotated 90 degrees clockwise (left relative to you)
----
D (down face) = the bottom layer is rotated 90 degrees clockwise (right relative to you)
----
F (front face) = the front face is rotated 90 degrees clockwise (right relative to you)
----
B (back face) = the back face is rotated 90 degrees clockwise (left relative to you)
----
M (middle slice) = the middle vertical face is rotated 90 degrees clockwise (downwards relative to you, following L)
----
E (equator slice) = the middle horizontal face is rotated 90 degrees clockwise (right relative to you, following D)
----
S (back slice) = the middle horizontal back face is rotated 90 degrees clockwise (right relative to you, following F)
----
Notes that M, E, and S are considered 'slice' moves, not face moves.

Inverted Moves
Following any letter, the inverse symbol, whether it is an i or a prime symbol, will invert the move so that it goes counterclockwise instead of the usual clockwise. Therefore, the moves will be exactly opposite as they are in the Standard Moves section, i.e. R', D', F', etc.

Double Moves
Adding the number 2 after the letter (e.g. R2, E2, U2, etc.) will mean the rotation of that side 90 degrees, so the move will be executed twice, thus the number 2.

Double Standard Moves
Double Standard Moves are the normal Standard Moves, but with the addition of a middle layer also being moved. This is indicated by either a "w" after the letter (WCA notation), or the letter not being capitalized, but lowercase (Singmaster notation). These moves can also be inverted:

----
Rw/r takes R and M clockwise
----
Lw/l takes L and M clockwise
----
Uw/u takes U and E clockwise
----
Dw/d takes D and E clockwise
----
Fw/f takes F and S clockwise
----
Bw/b takes B and S clockwise
----

Inversely:

----
Rw'/r' takes R and M counterclockwise
----
Lw'/l' takes L and M counterclockwise
----
Uw'/u' takes U and E counterclockwise
----
Dw'/d' takes D and E counterclockwise
----
Fw'/f' takes F and S counterclockwise
----
Bw'/b' takes B and S counterclockwise
----

M, E, and S cannot be moved doubly as the others can.

Many Layered Moves
Moving beyond 5x5x5, the above notations become inadequate, as it becomes impossible to notate the turning of the innermost layers, or any layer beyond the outermost two, and the middle slices. To notate the turning of many (more than two) layers, preface the lower case letter with the number or turned layers, or follow the w with the number of layers. Prime and two (" ' " and "2") still come at the end of the notation. Such notation can be demonstrated in the scrambles of cubes with dimensions higher than NxNxN when n = 5, in such timers as qqtimer.net.

Inversely works just as well. Simply notate the below notations with a prime (" ' ") to make such turns counterclockwise instead of clockwise.

----
3Rw/3r takes the rightmost three layers clockwise
----
3Lw/3l takes the leftmost three layers clockwise
----
3Uw/3u takes the top three layers clockwise
----
3Dw/3d takes the bottom three layers clockwise
----
3Fw/3f takes the front three layers clockwise
----
3Bw/3b takes the back three layers clockwise
----

Cube Rotations
Besides moving face, the entire cube moving (a cube rotation) can also be written with either an x, y, or z. Often times, since they are not face rotations, they will be enclosed in parenthesis, like (x), (y), or (z) respectively. They can also be inverted the same way as face rotations: x', y' and z'.

----
x = turn the entire cube so that what is on the bottom face is now facing you
----
x' = turn the entire cube so that what is on the top face is now facing you
----
y = turn the entire cube so that what is on the right face is now facing you
Swiss Notation
Another notation which is occasionally seen is Swiss Notation. This substitutes numbers for the letters identifying the cube faces. Proponents tout the following advantages:
* The notation does not favor any particular language
* Memorization is easier
* Mirroring is easier

A lubricant (or lube) is a material which can be put in a puzzle to make it easier to turn or smoother. This page contains descriptions of different lubricants and specific suggestions for how to use them. In general, to lube a cube, you should apply the lubricant either by removing one piece and spraying it in, or by disassembling the cube completely and coating the pieces in lubricant. After lube is applied, it is usually best to not time a solve immediately, but rather give the lube a few minutes to work in. It is also recommended that you do not apply lube to very stiff cubes, as this can sometimes make them even harder to turn; instead, try putting vaseline in the cube, then after a week or two, clean it out and then lubricate it.

The most important part of speedcubing, known to halve times for many people.

The following two general terms are used to characterise the friction effects of a lubricant:
* Static Friction - force required to initiate a turn.
* Dynamic Friction - resistance felt during the turn.
The range of lubricants available affect each of these aspects in differing degrees. For example, silicone oils tend to reduce static friction, while increasing dynamic friction.

Choose the right lube, or it will make it worse. The right lube depends on player and cube. There is no single agreed-on recommendation.

A mixture of lubricants may suit your needs. Experiment in a rational manner, trying to solve specific problems. If a cube becomes dirty or extremely gummy, it may be necessary to disassemble it and clean the pieces with soapy water and a toothbrush before attempting to relube.

Silicon-Based
Silicon-based lubricants are a highly popular and effective way to lubricate cubes.
Silicone sprays leave a smooth coat of lube over the cube's plastic to make it glide smoothly over other surfaces, thus making your cube turn smoother.

Cubicle Silicone Lube
There is a wide range of lubes from 5cc to 25cc, from Weight 5 to Weight 1. The heavier lube is better for the core (Weight 5,4,3) and the lighter lube is better for the pieces (Weight 3,2,1). TheCubicle Silicone Lube

Lubicle Silicone Lube
Link:

Lubix Cube
A high viscosity pure silicone oil fluid. Very Effective and has risen to one of the most popular lubricants on sale. The lubricant is a little expensive but only very little is needed and it is said to last a very long time.

The same silicone oil (dimethylsiloxane fluid) could be found at most local hobby stores with a much cheaper price, though missing Lubix's syringe.

Rubik's Lube
This is the lube that comes in a syringe-like container when you order from Rubiks.com.

Maru Lubricant
A white, milk like liquid. Works very well and is very popular. Huge performance increase on the spot even with only 1 or 2 drops.The lubricant tends to dry out quickly during a weeks period. Very Cheap and lasts for over 3 months per bottle.

Cubesmith Lube
Before Cubesmith wasn't no longer available again, Cubesmith used to sell low and high viscosity lube here. Each syringe contained 5 cc of lube. It did not melt plastic like Jig-A-Loo, CRC, and vaseline can. If you were gonna use it, avoiding getting the lube on the stickers, as it may compromise the adhesive. Each order also came with 2 Cubesmith logo stickers.

Jig-A-Loo
Used by many cubers, this lubricant works very well. However, it can melt plastic temporarily, so it is recommended that you completely disassemble your cube to lubricate it, and that you let the pieces dry well before reassembly. Available in the US and Canada. @see jigaloo.com, Speedsolving.com: The TRUTH about Jig-A-Loo

CRC Silicone Spray
CRC silicon spray has been used by many cubers. This is a very good lubricant to use. It will dry out soon, but works well. It is known to eat cubes too, so use with caution. Available at Wal Mart in the US and Canada. Available at some hardware stores in Australia.

Tableau Dry Lube
A silicone-based spray lubricant, popular in the UK. Cheap to buy and often gets good reviews. eBay.co.uk is usually the best place to buy it online. Like most spray lubricants, its propellant can cause temporary melting of plastic, so it is recommended that the cube is disassembled to allow the lube to dry before use.
@see tableauproducts.com

Shock Oil
Available worldwide, this comes in a range of viscosities and is 100% pure silicone oil. Mainly sold for radio controlled car shock absorbers. Available from racingstate.com in wt30 (UK only), or towerhobbies.com in a range of viscosities including wt10, wt20 and wt30 (shipping is expensive, but available worldwide).

Differential Oil
Differential oils of very high viscosity have been used successfully by some cubers. 50,000wt oils such as this one are reported to produce very good results. The right quantity is a small drop per cube, and applying more may make a cube slower and sticky. These oils are available in toy shops as well as on eBay.

Maplin Silicone Grease with PTFE
Works well on DIY cubes, and is easy to find in the UK. Comes in a spray can with extension tube for lazy lubing. @see maplin.co.uk

Armour All original protectant
It is silicone based, and pretty good, but sometimes causes the cube to gunk up when overlubed. It is recommended that you wipe off excess lubricant after using. @see armorall.com

Other silicone lubricants
* Gyrolon Universal Silikonspray - Available in the german dicounter ALDI
* OK/Q8 SILKON SPRAY, avaiable in Sweden, much like CRC but does not dry out as fast.
* Bicycle chain lube - some contain silicone oils, but are not recommended as they are in a petroleum-based carrier which will damage the plastic pieces.

Water-Based
Water based lubricants can make a puzzle very fast and smooth. They have a reputation for quickly losing their effectiveness. Some manufacturers have created formulations that improve their longevity. They should only be used on the surfaces of the plastic pieces. Using them on metal pieces such as screws and springs will cause corrosion problems.

Cubicle Labs DNM-37
This lube contains hyrophilic substances that draw moisture from the air to improve longevity.

Angstrom
Angstrom makes two water based lubricants:
* <b>Compound X</b> is designed for making puzzles slower without making them gummy.
* <b>Compound V</b> is designed for making puzzles faster.

Homemade
Video sharing sites such as YouTube host many how-to videos by people making their own water-based lubricants. These are made with common household items such as:
* Olive Oil
* Dish Soap
* Hand Soap
* Shampoo/Conditioner
* Mouthwash
* Skin Moisturizer
* Glycerin
You should experiment with these on a puzzle which you do not care about very much. Expect to relube frequently.

PFPE-Based
Perfluoropolyethers are a class of synthetic oils invented by DuPont. They are mainly used in the aerospace industry for their exceptional resistance to degrading by chemical attack and high temperatures. Its use in speed cubing provides the non-damaging benefits of silicone-based oils but with the added advantage of lasting much longer due to the material's very low evaporation rate.

T-1
T-Minus One Speed Cube Oil comes with a 5ml bottle of PFPE and molybdenum disulfide core grease in a syringe. Sold on Amazon

Petroleum-Based
These include lubricants such as vaseline, WD-40, or Liquid Wrench. It is recommended that you do not use these, but if you really want to, use them with caution, as petroleum and petroleum distillates speed the aging of plastic, and may dissolve the plastic resulting in destruction of the pieces and the internal mechanism. Excessive uses of these lubricants often lead to the center mechanism breaking apart completely. Some, however, have reported success using petroleum based lubricants to speed up breaking in of new cubes. It would be best if you have a tight cube (Rubik's brand) to lube it will a petroleum based jelly for about a month. Then take it all a part and cleaning it and use a silicone base lubricant.

Vaseline
Goopy and well known, this is not the best lube. Being a petroleum based lubricant it will speed the deterioration of the pieces as well as the internal mechanism. Some people recommend using vaseline for a while to wear down the inside of the cube (almost like breaking in the cube) before using other lubricants.

WD-40
Known for damaging cubes by wearing the pieces in and making them harder to turn, this does not actually act as a lubricant for the plastic at all. However, there have been some success stories of WD-40 being used on cubes and making them smoother.
It is recommended you do not use this. If you must, however, you should wash or wipe it off after about half an hour.

Liquid Wrench and WD-40 Silicone
Even though Liquid Wrench and WD-40 silicone says Silicone Spray on the can, it still contains petroleum distillates. The lubricants also have a very petroleum-like smell and will stay there. Liquid Wrench and WD-40 silicone sprays are not odorless. Do not use them. It contains less than 5% of silicone.

Miscellaneous Other Lubricants
Mystic
This lube from The Cubicle is plant-based, made from Aloe. They recommend using within a year, as it will spoil.

Trader Joe's also sells an aloe vera gel which you might experiment with.

Cooking No-stick Spray
Yes, PAM. Not necessarily the cleanest or best thing to use, it works nonetheless. It will slowly eat the plastic but not nearly as fast as petroleum based products. It is recommended you clean out your cube frequently if you use this.

White Lithium Grease
There are some mixed results of this lubricant, but it does work fairly well. The cube will have a sticky feeling after using it, though it wears off after some breaking-in.

Furniture Polish
Some furniture polishes such as Mr Sheen and Shine-Up Polish contain silicone and can be a cheap and widely available lubricant. Reviews are mixed with some reporting a positive result, while others aren't convinced.

Graphite Powder
A dry, oil-free solution. Reduces the 'sticky' feeling, but causes cube to turn less smoothly.
Water-Based
Water based lubricants can make a puzzle very fast and smooth. They have a reputation for quickly losing their effectiveness. Some manufacturers have created formulations that improve their longevity. They should only be used on the surfaces of the plastic pieces. Using them on metal pieces such as screws and springs will cause corrosion problems.

* Olive Oil
* Dish Soap
* Hand Soap
* Shampoo/Conditioner
* Mouthwash
* Skin Moisturizer
* Glycerin

Davidlark: Added caveat regarding bicycle chain lubes

* Olive Oil
* Dish Soap
* Hand Soap
* Shampoo/Conditioner
* Mouthwash
* Skin Moisturizer
* Glycerin

Davidlark: Added section for water-based lubes

Now there are Lubicle lubes: speedy, normal, gummy, and others, like 1, silk and black.

Link:

Link

@see tableauproducts.com

* Speedsolving.com : What type of Shock oil

Water-Based
Water based lubricants can make a puzzle very fast and smooth.

Definition for E
As it was, it was inconsistent. I changed it so that "relative to you", "following D", and the picture were all consistent. However, it strikes me that the original "left relative to you" (i.e., following U) would have been the more obvious way to define it. Given the previous inconsistency, it strikes me that the picture could be wrong, and that "following U" was what really had been intended. Is there a way to resolve this for certain? DrHow (talk) 20:24, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
Swiss Notation
I added a section for Swiss Notation. I support the following:
* Splitting the page into separate articles for each flavour of notation.
* Splitting the image into separate images for each section, and floating them to the right.
* Adding system-wide CSS to improve and standardize the appearance of tables.

Perhaps I'll fix these some day.

This is indicated by either a "w" after the letter, or the letter not being capitalized, but lowercase. These moves can also be inverted:

----
Rw/r takes R and M clockwise
----
Lw/l takes L and M clockwise
----
Uw/u takes U and E clockwise
----
Dw/d takes D and E clockwise
----
Fw/f takes F and S clockwise
----
Bw/b takes B and S clockwise
----

Inversely:

----
Rw'/r' takes R and M counterclockwise
----
Lw'/l' takes L and M counterclockwise
----
Uw'/u' takes U and E counterclockwise
----
Dw'/d' takes D and E counterclockwise
----
Fw'/f' takes F and S counterclockwise
----
Bw'/b' takes B and S counterclockwise
----

M, E, and S cannot be moved doubly as the others can.

Many Layered Moves
Moving beyond 5x5x5, the above notations become inadequate, as it becomes impossible to notate the turning of the innermost layers, or any layer beyond the outermost two, and the middle slices. To notate the turning of many (more than two) layers, preface the lower case letter with the number or turned layers, or follow the w with the number of layers. Prime and two (" ' " and "2") still come at the end of the notation. Such notation can be demonstrated in the scrambles of cubes with dimensions higher than NxNxN when n = 5, in such timers as qqtimer.net.

Inversely works just as well. Simply notate the below notations with a prime (" ' ") to make such turns counterclockwise instead of clockwise.

----
3Rw/3r takes the rightmost three layers clockwise
----
3Lw/3l takes the leftmost three layers clockwise
----
3Uw/3u takes the top three layers clockwise
----
3Dw/3d takes the bottom three layers clockwise
----
3Fw/3f takes the front three layers clockwise
----
3Bw/3b takes the back three layers clockwise
----

Cube Rotations
Besides moving face, the entire cube moving (a cube rotation) can also be written with either an x, y, or z. Often times, since they are not face rotations, they will be enclosed in parenthesis, like (x), (y), or (z) respectively. They can also be inverted the same way as face rotations: x', y' and z'.

----
x = turn the entire cube so that what is on the bottom face is now facing you
----
x' = turn the entire cube so that what is on the top face is now facing you
----
y = turn the entire cube so that what is on the right face is now facing you
----
y' = turn the entire cube so that what is on the left face is now facing you
----
z = turn the entire cube so that what is on the top face is now on the right of you
----
z' = turn the entire cube so that what is on the top face is now on the left of you
----

Swiss Notation
Another notation which is occasionally seen is Swiss Notation. This substitutes numbers for the letters identifying the cube faces. Proponents tout the following advantages:
* The notation does not favor any particular language
* Memorization is easier
* Mirroring is easier

MoYu WeiPo 2x2
3x3
MoYu HuanYing
The MoYu HuanYing has a minimal plastic feel which makes the cube lighter than it’s competitors, but also makes a lot of noise when speed solving. MoYu took the torpedo design and flattened out the piece, which is different from the common torpedo structure. The stickers it came with are very bright, and good quality. It rarely pops, but if you handle it harshly the corners can twist accidentally. The interior has relatively little plastic except of what is only necessary for the cube to function. This causes the cube to be lightweight and have less friction when turning the cube. Overall it was a good speedcube, but a bit noisy.

The edge pieces have a bit of a simplistic look up until the very end of the piece: the lip on the edge piece has a curve that compliments the corner pieces. The "flattened" torpedo hugs the edge pieces to the corner pieces, and seems to reduce popping significantly. The cube locks up more since there is no breathing room in the torpedos.

The corner pieces do not show much differences from that of other cubes. It isn’t elongated like the Dayan series, but instead has a distance that seems to have the corner piece "hug" the rest of the cube. Like the edges, there is little breathing room which reduces popping but causes lock-ups.

MoYu WeiLong
The WeiLong was created after the HuanYing, and was a deliberate attempt to improve on the HuanYing. They kept the squished torpedo, adding more plastic to the interior corner pieces, and making the corner cutting better. The WeiLong resulted in a fuller cube with less clicks, and fewer lock ups while maintaining quick rotations, great corner cutting, and added stability to keep it all together.

The corner stalks are short and rounded and the base is wider to help prevent popping. Also the edge pieces are wider and have higher ridges and grooves. The corner pieces are blocky and smooth much like a GuHong. The edge pieces interlock with the centerpieces and have torpedos to further improve anti-popping. The cube is made of a hard and thick matte plastic that glides smoothly. This cube is fast and effortless but as a consequence has a reputation of being uncontrollable at high speeds and can overshoot or ruin lookahead/recognition. It cuts at 45 degrees and past on even the tightest tensions and reverse corner cuts about 2/3 of a cubie. It is very quiet when turning accurately but corner cuts loudly.

MoYu WeiLong V2
The MoYu WeiLong V2 is the second revision of the tremendously popular MoYu WeiLong. The most notable change is the way in which the pieces are put together. Other than this, the mechanism remains largely unchanged.

MoYu AoLong
The Aolong improves on the Weilong's weak points. It is known for taking the mechanism of the MoYu Aosu, which many consider to be the best 4x4 speedcube. It is much more controllable while maintaining a decent amount of speed from the Weilong, even during first turns.

Out of the box, it is very dry, and not unlike a WeiLong until you test out the corner cutting. The corner cutting is very good, with an easy 1 1/2 cubies, and 3/4 reverse. After breaking it in and lubing it, the corner cutting becomes much easier, and better, the dry feeling goes away a little (it’s still a little noisy), and it becomes very fast, though it is very easily gummed up by anything wrong, like excess lube, cube dust or water. The stickers are very durable.

MoYu LiYing
MoYu DianMa
MoYu AoLong V2
The MoYu AoLong V2 is an updated version of the original MoYu AoLong. It was intended to reduce corner twists after Feliks Zemdegs received a DNF on a would-be world record due to a corner twist.

However, "bad" Aolongs exist due to the V2 controversy during July 2014. MoYu decided to produce the first batch of Aolong V2s with a different plastic while discontinuing the V1. Once everyone noticed how poor the performance was on the new cubes, MoYu changed the plastic on all new V2s. All new V2s are made with the proper plastic. It was regarded as a brilliant cube which set the standard for speed cubes.

MoYu HuaLong
MoYu TangLong
The MoYu TangLong was released soon after the Gans 356 to compete with it. Its main differences from the Gans is that it is more stable, and is also slightly slower.

MoYu AoLong GT
MoYu WeiLong GTS
The MoYu WeiLong GTS was released in 2016. It is fast, and very smooth. It corner cuts nearly two pieces forward and one piece reverse, so that it rarely catches. It is designed with caps on the pieces rather than the pieces being split into multiple sections, meaning that a stickerless version would not be possible.

MoYu YuLong
This budget cube has a light, crunchy feel. The edges pop & the corners twist fairly easily when set up loose. The pieces of the stickerless version are pressed together without glue, and can fall apart when they pop out. If you're looking for an inexpensive cube with a pleasant crunch, this might work for you, despite the cheap construction.
MoYu (Chinese: 魔域) is a Chinese cube brand. They are a sub-brand of the YongJun company. The MoYu brand was created around 2012 as a platform for external designers to provide designs to YJ for production, marketing etc.

Name
The name MoYu (魔域) is a combination of two words: "Mo" meaning Magic (Rubik's Cubes in China are known as Magic Cubes) and "Yu" meaning Region, Land etc. The four-character glyph 魔域文化 which is often marked on their cubes means MoYu Culture.
